='[godfather];4614184']hi There,

Dont know what kind of response Iwill get. But most of the time, when a person buys a DSLR he's new to these cameras. Which have a lot of settings and options. Which sometimes (I'd say most of the time) helps in capturing great shots. So Why not talk about some small things which can help some new bies like me??

Like setting aperture values, according to the situation, I mean how much at a specific focal lenght and in particular lighting.

Setting Shutter speeds etc??

I think apertures are the most sophesticated figures which if set in a proper manner can provide with mind blowing results

I do not know what dslr do You have, but at the beginning the video below helped me a lot in understanding the basic settings of my dslr.

If it gives you the feature set that will give you what you need, that should be ok. I use ACR as part of CS3 and have been very happy with the improvements.

Thanks to PhotosGuy for this link whic has some really great articles on composition. Maybe not gear-centric enough for some, but if you're anything like me you can learn a ton from this site's collection http://photoinf.com/ (external link)

Godfather, I'm wondering if you were too close to the flowers in both shots? That's not a macro lens, and if you were closer than the closest focusing distance the lens is designed for, then things won't be sharp. What are your shutter speed and aperture for these?

Those are 100% crops - what did the whole photo look like, i.e. where is the focus point set?

Godfather,

One thing about this lens (and many other lenses as well) is that it is not its sharpest wide open. I see you're testing it at f/1.8, and so I'm not surprised to see less-than-stellar results. To get a feel of the usefulness of this lens, I'd suggest a controlled series of shots, tripod-mounted, that run through the range of f-stops. I think you'll find that as you hit f/2 it will be quite sharp, through about f/16 or so.

Give it a try, and let us know what you come up with!

Well, I am not that pro in photography, but Isee some of the shots of other photographer with more color saturation, contrast and clarity, but wen I click I dont find them even near to the pros images.

Do lens have all the magic or PP also play a role in it?

Well, the short anwer is yes to both of those questions. :D

If the lighting conditions are ideal, focus is perfect and your exposure is right on, you can get a beautiful image with very little or even no PP at all. All good lenses and cameras will deliverable very attractive images under the right conditions when used properly.

But it's not often that lighting conditions are perfect, so that's where PS comes in.

Sometimes we may want to make some minor adjustments to the image because that's how we interpretted the scene, or how we want to represent it. Other times there may have been problems with the initial exposure so we have to do some "repair" in PS, like increasing exposure, reducing a highlight, reclaiming some shadow detail, changing the white balance, boosting washed out color with more saturation.... things like that.

Changes basically fall into 2 categories: necessary and artistic. Nothing has changed since the day of the darkroom. Photographers have faced the same issues since that first daguerrotype produced in 1839. - Stu ;)

Get this book by Bryan Peterson, "Understanding Exposure".

This is a really great resource for a number of different situations. I read it from cover to cover within two days. Good material and easy to understand.

I'm a relative newbie and am absorbing any info I can. There's also a wonderful post on this site called "Let's start at the beginning...the very beginning." I can't remember the poster but I printed it out and refer to it all the time as a refresher. Do a search on the name.

Good luck.
