I know there are some differences, like the zoom, etc..but just was wondering what you folks think out there. I will be taking lots of photos of my 6 year old as well as scenery, etc...i want a camera that I will not say in a few months..man i have outgrown this camera. I have read so many reviews that my head is about to explode...thanks
J

I'd say the only significant differences between the two are the zoom range (SX100 has a greater range) and the viewfinder (A570 has an optical finder). Other than that, they're not all that different, so you won't outgrow one any faster than the other. On that basis, I'd suggest the A570 since if you do start to feel you've outgrown the camera, you won't have sunk as much into it.

Jon,
that is what I was thinking...who knows what will come down the road tomorrow. I am nervous about getting a camera without the viewfinder when it is sunny outside. The zoom isnt all that different I guess since my photos will not be taken from that much of a distance. Everywhere I have read likes the IQ of the 570..and many talk about the RAW hack...and for over 100 dollars less...seems to be an easy decision....have you used the 570?

I haven't got either; my A-series experience is mainly with my old A80 and now my A620. Personally, I want both the viewfinder and the flip-out screen in my P&S.

Jon, see you live in MD..so do I. It gets too overwhelming to pick a camera these days..i have an old canon s410 that I love but I think it has just grown too old...i had an oly c7000 zoom that just died. that was a great camera...do you think the canons are better than the oly's?

are there any meetings scheduled anytime soon for photo folks.

Olympus has historically made design choices (dating back to the OM-1) that I disliked, while I've used Canons since the '70s. It was never really a decision for me.

There are a couple of MD/DC/VA threads in the Member Activities forum; one's linked in my sig. Some people are planning a meet-up at the National Building Museum on the 12th as well (CAWOG, IIRC).

I'm not big on a viewfinder. For some reason I want one, but I never use it. I'd still get the SX100. Such a nice camera and if I was getting a camera that size I better get some zoom. That's what those Delkin shades are for, or your hand.

I am speaking from my own personal experience. I had a A95 5MP then while on a wk end trip it quit just like that, so I was forced to go a local store and bought A570 and really enjoyed, but since I am going to Guatemala I wanted more Zoom power and I didn't want to take my Dig SLR, too risky for that area.

So I bought the SX100 and granted its only 1/2 MP over the A570 but the 10x optical is phenomenal. As far as the viewfinder, I guess ever since I got the A95 I used the LCD and is not a big deal to me.

I shot 20 frames on the SX and let me tell you the zoom has a great reach, and kept it at Auto ISO. I bought the black SX100 and somehow it looks more like a mini SLR if you ask me. The only thing I wish is that it could shoot RAW but then again it would be overpriced in the after market like the G7, and also I wish it had a rotating LCD
