My first attempt at calibrating my monitor did not work out so well.

I now have a pink cursor.

I'll keep trying.

Tip: don't always go for the suggested settings that the wizard gives you when you start create a new profile with the gamma and color temp you want (I go 2.2 and 6500) also if you have a monitor that has RGB controls make sure you're adjusting the Gain controls and not the B (can't remember what B stands for) ones. Also remember if the place you calibrate to has a window light coming in the calibration will be different at different times of day, it is recommended in the manual that you have a working environment with no changing light.

What color did your cursor have before calibrating?

If it had some out of gamut color, the color after profiling is undefined/unpredictable!
With a simple calibration or profiling with shaper curves, this is not a problem, but with a large LUT profile, out of gamut colors can end anywhere.

If your monitor is an LCD, leave contrast and RGB settings at their default. The brightness setting can be set where you feel comfortable for viewing.
For LCD it is normally best to calibrate for the LCD's native color temperature. If your cursor was white before, it is likely this, that is the problem.

I am trying again, this time with 2 new 22" Samsung LCD monitors. I also got a new desktop PC.

2nd & 3rd attempts are better, but this is going to take time to get right. At least I'll get to know the program.

I also had major problems calibrating my new 22" Samsung LCD with the Spyder 2 Pro. I got a brownish-yellowish color cast when I calibrated. I finally gave up, uninstalled the software and adjusted it manually. The model I have is the 2220WM. Right out of the box it was extremely bright and had a bluish cast. I have it adjusted manually now so that it feels like my old 19" Dell Ultrasharp.

I've learned through the photo forums that the 22" LCDs are inferior to the 20" and 24". I'm not going to waste money on new calibrating hardware because I know it's the monitor and not the Spyder 2. I'm saving for a larger, higher quality LCD and I'll give this Samsung to my kid to use in her college dorm.

I can support the view about leaving the settings for the colors at their defaults. When I had the non-pro version of Colorvision's software, i did adjust the colors in line with the software and I got some odd effects on the cursor color. When I upgraded to the pro version, it said LCDs are better left at their defaults and let the profile handle everything. This fixed it immediately for me. Now I just adjust the brightness in order to match my two monitors together.

I have a non-pro version too. The calibration on my DELL 22" & Samsung 22" are very inconsistent. Both them lean towards red/brown through my eyes. My question is that if it is true color of the display after calibration, or it is just a color my eyes/brain can accept based on my own judgement...

I believe the calibration for a photographer here is to reflect the true color of the image so that we can adjust it accordingly for display/print purpose. If we are not sure if the calibrated color is the REAL color on your monitor (not based on our own eyes along with different environment), what is the point to calibrate your display anyways... I am a bit doubt about the calibration tools provide what we really need here.

I have a Samsung 226CW and it's been a nightmare to calibrate; I've just about given up. My Dell 2007wfp (20") was a piece of cake. I may get a 2407wfp to replace the Samsung.

Like Rob, I had problems when I first tried to calibrate using the RGB sliders on my Dell 2405FPW until I followed Colorvision's advice and just let the Spyder2 handle everything. When Dell replaced my 2405 with a 2407WFP, I didn't even bother to look to see if it had the sliders and the Spyder2 did a great job.

Ocron, That's not what I wanted to hear. Were you using Spyder to calibrate?

I'm using an x-rite MonacoOPTIX. I'm going to try resetting the monitor to it's defaults as suggested above and try it again. I've used the software it came with as well as ColorEyes Display Pro. If I look at the gamma test pattern here: http://www.normankoren.com/makingfineprints1A.html (external link) (scroll down) it's off and there is a greenish/yellow tint in the bands.

I just received an email from from Tech Support at Colorvision. They asked me to send them the Spyder2 ICM profile created when I calibrated my 22" Samsung. I sent it off last night and I'm anxious to hear what they tell me.
