The reason we get to call our champions "World Champions" is because the best players from all over the world come to the US to play professional sports. While a USA national team may lose to another country's national team, the best players on that other country's national team will often play professionally in the US. Our "World Champions" are rarely comprised entirely of naturalized US citizens.
Case in point. 8 players on the 2004 Argentine national basketball team that Stealthy mentioned spent time in the NBA at some point in their careers.
OIC That actually makes sense. Still, I'll continue to mock the arrogance of the name(s).

You know, the best players in cricket will go and play in the English county league, but they don't call that the world championship.
Why don't they have a baseball team based in Japan and Korea (or both) both those countries are crazy about baseball?! Seriously, that would be a good idea I think. I mean it's Major League Baseball, doesn't have to be contained within the U.S.
