I'm considering Pocket Wizards or similar tranceiver units.

Do I want the $200. units or the $300. units? I'm looking at 3 or 4 max.

What accessories do I need to fire my EX550s?
What accessories do I need to fire my camera?

Are any of the cheaper altenatives any good? I don't know if I want to spend big money on something that will not get much use.

There are so many threads already on what is needed for a PW setup and thats probably why no one has answered your question yet... You would only need the $200 ones. To fire the 550EX you should get a hot shoe with a PW cable on it. I bought the one from flashzebra.com for $20 a piece. Youll need one per flash. To fire your camera remotely with the PW youll need to buy or make the cable that goes from the PW to your specific camera body. VERY expensive to by, cheap to make.
