I haven’t shot with the 30D but I do have a 400D which essentially has the same focus system as the 30D as I understand it and I can clearly say that the 40D focuses quicker and more accurately especially in AI.

My autofocus is working great on the 40D, huge improvement over my 400D and I find AI Servo to be much more responsive and accurate (this was tested with a 70-200mm f4 L lens).

Just got back from Disney. My first big trip with the 40D. Filled up 6GB of images. Many shot at night, many hand held ISO1600 and "H". First view thru my images, I through out about 50 of the close to 400 RAW images. I think that's darn GREAT! My 20D would have been about 75% keeper.

AI Servo on the 40d is really something...I'm very delighted with the better AF on the 40D

I shoot a lot of birds pictures, and the one thing I have noticed comparing the 40D to the 30D is that the 40D does a much better job of focusing on birds that are in the midst of leaves and branches. The 30D would almost always have problems picking out the bird, while the 40D often gives tack-sharp images and is not fooled by the branches. I don't know if the sensors are smaller (not likely) or what. It is not a matter of the center point (which I use) being cross-type, because my birding lens (100-400) is f/5.6.

I used to have an XTi, and my 40D is much better at focusing with AI Servo + 70-200/4L. I get close to 90% properly focused shots of moving targets with that lens, while the XTi keeper rate was about 70% with the same lens.

So far so good.

Haven't had a chance to shoot any fast moving low light sports yet.

Stay tuned.

Are you viewing your images at 100% in photoshop in making your comparsions?

To Stardog: I've always managed just fine with my 30D, but my 40D is definitely better.

Very good AF. My keeper rate for basketball pics has improved dramatically with the 40D over the 30D.
