Photoshop Crop Tool Help

Either I'm missing something simple or it can't be done. What I want to do is tell the crop tool to maintain a ratio, like 1:1.5 when I'm using it. I know I can tell it to create a given size, say 800x533 and it will keep that ratio but the cropped version will be 800x533 regardless of the number of pixels in the original I select. What I want is if I select 1960x1306 pixels using a set ratio, I want to end up with an image of 1960x1306 pixels. Does that make sense? And is that possible?

Try doing it this way.

1. select the rectangle marquee tool.
2. In the top bar under the main menus is a bar where you can type in the ratio (see image).
3. Use "image/crop"

HTTP response: 404 | MIME changed to 'text/html' | Byte size: ZERO

Aha, thanks, this is something I've also been looking for. Strange that the crop tool itself doesn't have an option to keep only the ratio fixed (without resampling)....

Thanks a bunch evilenglishman. You have just simplified my life a lot (whenever I'm cropping that is)... Now I can stop pulling my hair out when cropping my images

With the crop tool selected you will see a set of boxes in the same place as the above solution only it will have sizes in it. Set your width, length and resolution all at once!

Keep in mind it only accepts inches (or cm ) units, not pixels.

Try typing in "px" after the number - works in Elements 2 even though pixels is not listed as an option.

I have photoshop 2 and I don't use it. I have Roxio Photosuite 5 and it does so much better than adobe. DPI settings are better and easier, and the big thing it is easier and quicker to get images to look good. Through photoshop there's too many things you have to do on your own to adjust the image, where Roxio basically gets it right with a one step autofix.

Plus it has a much easier cropping procedure. I highly recommend it. I know they are up to version 7 but I'm very happy with v5
