If you look closely, it looks to me like a major lack of detail. As far as I can see this is properly exposed. It almost looks like chris-crossed lines. You really have to looks close to see what I mean. There is muddy detail. What am I doing wrong. If I do any kind of sharpening, the muddy criss-cross detail sticks out really bad. Am I crazy, is it user error? I need to know.

This is ISO 100, f/5.6, 1/200, w/flash, and shot with the Canon 24-70 f/2.8L one of their best lenses.

Here is the original at a smaller size. Doesn't look bad, but I keep seeing this muddy garbage detail in a lot of my photos.

I don't see anything you're talking about. Print it then tell me it's a problem.

I guess I could be losing my mind. There is supposed to be a specific texture to the shirt. To me it looks like it is lacking that detail. Perhaps I am asking to much of this camera.

I also remember my XT not being the most "wow" for those minute details but you can see the individual hairs on his arm. I'd say it's pretty damned good. It's not like you're using a $39K 'blad. I wouldn't call that a "huge lack of detail" though.

Or you're lacking the lighting which shows the texture you're looking for.

This is also a possibility. Shadow noise, even faint, will kill detail.

I think you're expecting too much fromt he XT. The shot is good , a nice mix of shadows and light...for texture on the shirt you're going to need good light.

Could be. I am seeing it more often then not in my post processing. I was just wondering if that is the typical detail of the XT. It is possible that i suck at lighting too. . . hmm or I am just over analyzing my photos.

You're not goinng to get the detail from low lighting as you would with a 5D. XT is a decent camera to learn with, but there is also a reason why it's the lowest level of DLR's from canon.

Lighting is a whole other field of knowledge, there are some great books and courses that will teach tricks and tips of lighting.

I personally think you expected to much from that shot with the XT with the lighting the way it was.

Still , I think it was a cool shot

I'd say both, but not as harsh. You don't suck at lighting, but that shot in particular isn't exactly lit well, IMHO. You have a glaring hot spot on his cheek with heavy shadowing towards us. It's not the shadow that matters most but the hot spot has no purpose. More even light would have been better. The reason the image is showing as pretty much well exposed on the histogram is that you just barely kept that hot spot from blowing out. That doesn't mean the overall image is properly exposed or evenly lit.

You're also expecting too much from an entry level dSLR, although they're quite capable cameras.
