What did you do in your post processing?

For the zoomed out image, I used ACR to perform various adjustments such as exposure, recovery, fill, black, brightness, contrast, clarity, vibrance, sharpening, luminance & chrominance noise, and lens aberration -- focusing strictly on the person in the picture. I then opened it in Photoshop as a Smart Object and created three identical layers. I then opened layer 2 in ACR and readjusted the above parameters while only concentrating on the eyes. finally, I opened the third layer in ACR, working only on the background. Back in Photoshop, I applied a gradient blur to the third layer. I applied a mask to the "eyes" layer and combined it with the original layer with about 90% opacity. I used a mask to combine the blurred background layer with the other two using about 80% opacity.

For the 100% crop, I processed the entire image as a single layer using various ACR adjustments. Back in Photoshop, I used the NeatImage plug-in to clean up some of the noise in the dark areas.

The lighting in this picture is not perfect as you have some big contrasts and in the areas where the sun is not shining (shadows) you're bound to get some noise and lack of detail, regardless if you shoot in ISO 100 or not. That's just how the light and digital cameras works.

Have not read all of this post but CyberPet is on the money. IMHO correct light will make or break an image.
