I posted this picture in the people catagory, but what I really want is how to be a better photographer. I am in love with this first shot! But you can see in the 2nd shot her little sister gets the shaft. Why can I get some of my images tack sharp, and others in the same location, same setting are so soft?

Without our knowing more, there's no way we can offer advice.
But you are doing something diffeerent.

I am not so sure these are that far apart.
I think the eyes have it in shot 1 they are sharp and bright.
In shot 2 the eyes are not as sharp and the catch lights are a bit odd.
The JPEG of shot 1 looks a little soft on the posting but it is a lovely portrait as where shot2 is not so natural looking, so i guess what i am saying is for me you are not actually as inconsistent as you fear the differences are elsewhere i believe.
I can see why you love shot 1 though it is a cracker.

What more do you need to know? I'll try: I shot these on the same rock. (facing different directions though) 40D, 17-85mm f/5.6 or 8 (I can't remember) 1/125 with 580ex flash straight on at -2. Anything else?

Did you shoot RAW or JPEG?
The 40D and the 17-85 at 5.6 - 8 sharpness should not be too much of an issue and the shutter speed should be quick enough to stop shake, espcially if you had IS on.
If you look at picture 2 at the texture of the cloth in her dress, on her left shoulder it is pin sharp but the detail is not there in the eye lashes or more importantly her eyes.
In the first picture the eye detail is much sharper, her eyebrows are not so blonde and therefore emphasise her eyes better. (not your fault, natures)
Something i learned from an accomplished glamour photographer was always concentrate on focus on the eyes. He taught me to use the history brush tool in PS to boost sharpening for eyes, eyelashes, lips and eyebrows.
You have not got Image Editing On so i can't show you what i mean but both of these young ladies have beautiful eyes and this would really work for them i am sure.
I also think you are being a bit hard on yourself, what you have here are 2 lovely portraits and both look very natural and very well composed, i think you have used the rule of thirds to great effect with the poses / cropping.

Thanks so much! I hadn't even noticed her shoulder. Your right, It's not the whole shot that it off, I just didn't get my focus in the right spot. Well, practice, practice, practice! I'll just have to get out some more. Oh, and I don't know how to turn the editing ON if you can tell me how, I would love to see your take!

Slight backfocus on the little sister and the overdone post-processing emphasizes it.

Maybe it's just my monitor, but it almost looks a bit blurry.

Are you center-point focusing on their eyes? I have noticed you're using a high f-stop so I don't think it would be a problem.

Thanks for the originals, i see why the catchlight in the eyes on the second shot looks odd, slightly over processed as cdifoto spotted.
I have attached the two images after processing as i was suggesting, i haven't pushed the softness of the focus the way you did, personally i think with skin that young and those looks they don't need it but that is obviously subjective.

What focus point were you using? Did you recompose? Did you change focal length before or after focusing?

Some very light USM, straightening, color corrections, and a bit of smoothening.

Great portrait

PETER, I like your version A LOT better! How the heck did you do that? And no, I didn't recompose, I havn't had enough practice to get great results with that just yet. And I'm not even sure what focus point I was using. There is just so much to think about. I don't know if I will ever be able to consider myself a Pro. Getting them to smile in the 30 degree weather was my first concern. Poor little girls. Their mom (a good friend of mine from out of state) was determined to at least try while they were in town.
