I stood in the snow for some time until this female Cardinal got used to me and eventually hopped over to my side of the bush. The snow acted as a reflector and resulted in pretty good lighting. These are uncropped images, so you can see that she let me get pretty close.

EOS 40D (my first shots posted here with the new body), EF 100-400 at 400mm, ISO 400, f/5.6, shutter as indcated. C&C welcome.

Great shots! The detail is awesome and they look sharp. You were right about the snow too, the reflected light really makes it for me. Just another reason for me to keep pushing for the 1-4.

If you can get one, do so! It is the best combination of flexibility, reach, and quality for birding, IMHO.

Thanks to all of you. I had been following a male Cardinal around when I noticed this female in a bush, and decided to see what she would do. My shots of her were better than any of the male, who would not let me get quite so close. When it comes to birds, I have concluded that you just have to be out there, and quite often, something nice will come along.

As far as the 100-400, it is literally my walk-around lens. It only comes off the camera if I have something unusual going on, like a graduation or family get-together.

This one was certainly an exception, letting me get so close. I have used the Kenko 1.4 TC in the past, but the 40D doesn't like it as well as the 30D did. It can make the difference when the bird is just a bit too far away, though.

Lovely images. Great detail in the feathers.
