Last Wednesday, I used my 40D attached to my compound microscope to photograph some snowflakes. I got a few that I am satisfied with. I will try to post a couple of photos.

Great stuff.

Could you post a section of detail at 100% crop and maybe toss in a photo of the setup you shot with?

Thanks for all the kind comments.

Here are 100% and 200% crops of the same photo. I will post a photo and description of my setup in another post.

Here is a list of and a photo of my setup:

Canon Angle Finder "B"
Canon 40D
Canon Macro Lens Mount Converter FD-EOS (the one without the glass in it)
Canon PhotoMicro Unit "F"

Spencer compound microscope (I did not use the top 10x microscope objective, only the lower 10x objective). 100x plus the 1.6 camera enlargement was WAY too big. I only saw a small part of a snowflake with the top objective in.

My scope does not have a light built-in (it is 62 years old) only a mirror for reflecting the light up to the specimen. I used a goose neck lamp with a full spectrum fluorescent light bulb directed at the mirror.

I had not used my microscope in forever and could not find any glass slides, so I used a round screw in plain glass camera filter to catch and view my snowflakes. The glass of the filter was raised alittle off the stage of the scope because of the rim of the filter. I think I could get better focus using a real microscope slide. Will try to find some before the next snow.

Ruth

Omg, i love these. I have a microscope very similar which my mum used when she was younger, but i can't get it to focus for the life of me. I figure it was taken apart at some point and not put together right. I might try and get a new one though.

I though about trying this myself. Looks a bit tricky. The light should be very even. Maybe convert to grayscale to eliminate the color outlines? Very nicely captured. --Rick

I am actually looking at getting a LED ring light to place below the stage. Most of the more modern lighted microscopes that I have seen on the internet recently are using LED lighting.
