I was in need of insipiration a couple of days ago and so I went to the bookstore and read magazines for over an hour. In digital photo pro, I wandered across this photographer named John Paul Caponigro. His pictures are epic and the magazine described him as the Master of Fine Art Photography.

His pics are super surrealistic and in one of his series he essentially overlays smoke photography onto a soothing ocean scape. (Refer to sufussion download in his gallery if interested) Well after reading the article and looking at his pictures, it got me into the fine art spirit. I didn't want to jock his style completely, but I did want to try out smoke photography.

Essentially what I did is looked at the smoke as if I was looking at a Rorschach ink blot test and then colored the smoke to mimic whatever object i saw. Some images are transformed and mirrored and some are composited with other smoke formations. It was definitely a fun experience, but I reek of incense and am over the smoke photography craving for awhile. Tell me what you think.

This one isnt supposed to look like anything, I just liked the way the composition and color turned out in the end. I do kind of see a turbocharger down at the bottom though.

Here's one shot that went into the "Crab" image, just to show you an original shot.

WOW! I love these. I've been wanting to try smoke photography for a while now. I bought some incense over the summer....but have yet to play with it.

Did you colorize it in PS or did you use gels or ?

Really awesome job.. the spirals are so pretty. :) I'm surprised you didn't get more comments...

These are beautiful! I prefer them to the seascapes in the link

Were the tight spirals in the first one from moving the tip of the incense stick?

Hi Jeff, I love your smoke shots. I hope you don't mind my posting my attempt at smoke photography.
