Dandy why not go to strobist.com and work on the boot camp exercises. It will give you more structure in learning. Books are nice, practice is better.

ABR800
AB800 with 20% grid
Reflector
Rebel XTI

I've been testing different configurations and here's one of the pix I got.

Thanks. The Softbox and the main light are Amvona 600W and the other one is an AB 800.

The backdrop is black. The settings on that shot were 250 at f/6.3. You can see the others here which has EXIF intact...
