Does the New SD950 Shoot Macro?

I'm thinking of getting a P&S for macro shots instead of getting a macro lens for my 5D. The SD950 sounds like an amazing camera for $350 and the 12 mp will work well with my 5D images. So, if it does do macro ring shots, for instance, I'll invest in one. Does anyone have this camera and how good is it?

I don't think you'll be happy with it - the PowerShots hit best macro enlargement at shortest focal length. At the tele end of things you get about 3" closer than the "normal" close focus. You'll be right on top of the subject, and you'll be using on-camera flash. It'll disappoint you if only for that. Better to get a dedicated 90-105 mm macro for the 5D and 40D and go along with the lens changes.

I thought about that for a long time, getting the 100 macro, but I don't know how much I'd use it. Canon offers so many new models lately. It's a mess to go through all the specifications. Someone in the wedding forum suggested just using a P&S for the ring shots.

I may just decide to borrow my friend's S5 for weddings in the meantime. I have my savings reserved for other things. As you know.

Maybe pick up a set of tubes then. The Kenkos total up to 68 mm. On the 24-70 or 50 they'll get you down past life size with a decent working distance; on the 85 they'll still get you pretty close to it. And if you want the P&S for other reasons as well, there will be enough left over from the tubes for a less-expensive model.

That sounds good. Based on what I do, what would you recommend to get for the 85, since I take that lens with me all the time for events?

I have the Kenkos. 12, 20 & 36 mm combined. Full signal pass-through. That gets you to around 1.25 to 1. If you want to try mine to see how they'll do, let me know.
