hey guys im all new to this so heres my question. 17-85mm IS or 28-135mm IS? It would be my 1st lens and would want it to be a good walkaround lens. It would be mounted on a 30D so we have the 1.6 factor too. Please help me with your choice. If none suggest one that is the same price or less.

Thanks

just out of curiosty, why these two lenses?

you could pick up a 50mm prime for 1/4 the price of the 28-135

I've heard the 18-55 IS version is a bit better. Or maybe a Tamron 17-50? What kind of pictures you plan on taking most?

I really liked the 28/135 IS. Should be great combo with the 30D, and an outstanding walkabout lens. This is why it is the Kit lens used for the 40D (This is how I got mine originally).

17-85 IS should also be a great lens, though usually during the first year or more of photography (Depends on your needs and wants) the needs shift towards Tele (more mm's) rather than Wide Angles (less mm's).

Anyhow. I ditched the 24-80 L for the 24-105 IS as a walkaround lens, because those extra milimiters do make a difference.

I hope this helps.

Get the kit lens with your camera and shoot for awhile. You'll figure out later what you need.

I like the new 18-55 IS as a walkaround lens. Of course, I also like people who know how to capitalize and punuciate.

Nyuck--Nyuck--Nyuck.

My wife loves her 17-85 as a walkaround in good light.

Not sure if what you read here is about copy to copy variation

Or unreal expectations at a consumer price point.

Best of luck with your decision.

The 17-85mm is the EF-S equivalent of the 28-135mm, designed for 1.6X crop factors
(i.e. 17X1.6 and 85X1.6 approximate 28 and 135 respectively)

It is a more appropriate focal length range for walk about purposes in my opinion

It depends if you want the wide angle I suppose. I had the 28-135 IS and I sold it because I wanted to pick up something with a little more wide angle. 90% of my pictures were on 28mm - 50mm range when I shot with it. I would zoom occasionally. I lost many good shots just because I didn't have the wide angle range though. I've been shooting with my 50mm until I purchase my 17-40L as my walk around lens and it's been fine. I would say look at the tamron 17-50 or the sigma 17-70. But between those two lens I would probably take a 17-85. The 28-135 is an excellent lens though and the IS works great.

I'd pick the 17-85
