So, when I got my mkIII I pretty much started using my 35L as my "standard" as the 50L was a bit longer than I wanted. So, I sold the 50L and bought the 50/1.4 because i can still see myself using the FL, just not as much.

Just received the 50/1.4 today, bought the hood, an LP1214 lensbag all for $350, so about $900 less than the 50L.

Took some (at work) test shots wide open at 1.4...Holy Cow!!! Don't think I'll be missing the 50L like I thought.

Here's the first shot out of the box with the usual test target.
Shot in RAW converted in DPP, in camera sharpness setting is +5 (my usual sharp setting)

I was a bit worried about the sharpness wide open as accounts vary, this copy is fantastic. The DOF seems perfect (I can always tell using this little statue) Not a chart, but for my purposes this works really well
Cheers all

Yep...I find the 1.4 version to be a fantastic buy. I was so happy with it that when the 50L was released, I really didn't even give it a second thought.

I am hoping so as I just ordered one so I have a light fast lens for my 5d when I just want to have a simple compact street kit.

i'm having autofocusing issues with my 50mm 1.4. It just won't autofocus unless i manually focus it to almost spot on.

is this a common issue? i'm in toronto, canada, will canon fix this? where should i bring this in?

this blows..:(

if I'd have got a copy like the one I have now (I rented the first copy) I'd have bought it rather than the L, the build of the L, the "real" USM and the 1.2 vs. 1.4 is just not worth the extra $900 (to me). (this all being said, I haven't tried focus in low light yet)
Now this is a complete reverse from my previous posts as the 50/1.4 I had rented was quite soft until 2.8.

Is it when you try to focus on things really close up, because it doesn't focus well really close up. If that's not the problem sounds like its a bad lens. Call Canon and talk to a tech.

yea..it's bad focusing near and far, in low and bright light.

it's a bad piece of lens.. :( bought it 2nd hand.. no warranty. was working when i bought it.. but started to fail on me after like 2months of usage.
it just started to get worse and worse.

i sold my 50 1.4 when i sold my 5d. the two were excellent together but i prefer a 50mm FOV so i bought the 35 1.4 for my 1d3 :D.

Matt

Did you have to use your micro focus adjustment to get this result?

Similarly I went with the Sigma 30mm. It's a good compromise on the 10D and 1D II. Not exactly 50mm but close enough on the 10D and a good fast mostly-usable semi-wide on the 1D II. Plus it was cheap. :D

I've got a Takumar 50 for when I need the 50mm AOV.

No, none needed, but this weekend I'll break out the chart, I have to do a couple more lenses anyways:)
