Is it hard to get that total blacked out background look using black fabric? I imagine the fabric you choose would have to have a matte finish?
I also want to get the saturated white background look. Could I get that with a white sheet with a strobe aimed at the background?

I have dark green velvet curtains and when I tried them about 6-7 feet away from my subject, I was able to get nice black color. Youdo have to watch your light placement. Look for non-reflecting fabric.

I've been buying and loving the Botero double sided 10' x 12' backgrounds. They really look great and aren't thin and flimsy like so many. I recommend them highly.

Robert, good to know this about Botero. I am still waiitng for my first 10x20 SilverLake.

I am thinking of trying to dye a canvas drop cloth from the local home repair store. I saw something of doing this not to long ago. I figure one in a med-light blue and or a med grey and soem gels should take care of everything short of blue/green screen.

I wasn't too happy with mine. Altho, I'm sure I didn't do it well. I went w/ the spray on different concentrations method. It looked great, but the dye would rub off fairly easily. I did not want to risk getting it anywhere, so i went ahead and put it through the wash... and yup, lots of dye removed. It's a very light blue denim look now.

does anyone have any specific suggestions? I'm a bit weary of tossing it in the dryer right after dying it like one video shows... I already stained the dryer a bit.. something tells me doing this in the dead of winter doesn't help, heh.

I'm probably going to opt to use muslins as soon as I can get the 40-50% coupons.
