my god! here was me thinking canon would rip us in the uk off with a street price of £5000 when dpreview actually says £6000.

someone should tell canon that $8,000 = £4,457 - not £6,000

Why Mark II is in Finland 5000€ and in Germany 4400€ (we are both in EU and the gear is coming to both from Japan via Canon Europe)? In US it is $4500 which is 3700€ and they also get it from Japan.

 ?!

why the huge difference in price?

Is it because the US market is larger and smaller profit margins are more acceptable than in European countries?

The population of the US is around 287,524,305
The population of Europe is around 800,000,000

can't see how its a larger market

Before we start piling on, it's important to look at our respective governments, their international trade policies, tarriffs, etc.

Don't forget, we have an active grey market here in the US. Many of the items that are sold that way come from Asia and (gasp!) Europe. Why? Because U.S. dealers can buy them cheaper there.

Actually with the price they have mentioned I don't think so - it will most likely have a UK street price of £5000.
If the Nikon 2DX is only £3500, then i will be dumping all my Canon gear.

Really? The Nikon D2X is an 1.5x crop factor camera. It's not really comparable with the new full frame 1Ds Mark II monster. And IMO even the 1D Mark II is better (faster etc.) than the Nikon D2X.

I wonder how Nikon could get 12 MP on an 1.5x crop factor camera. With the 1D Mark II, 20D, and 1Ds Mark II we've seen that Canon is exceptionally good in making high-density, low-noise sensors. I wonder what the noise is like on the new Nikon. The pixel density is a lot higher than on the new Canon DSLRs, so I expect the Nikon to have more noise.

okay but work this out.

B&H are selling the current 1Ds for $7,999 - this is the same price as the 1Ds Mk2.
Calumet is selling the current 1Ds in the uk for around £5000 including VAT.

Where does the extra £1000 come from?

The £6000 price tag makes it over $10,000

Evil:
I hear what you're saying, but I still think the answer lies somewhere in the UK and not in Japan. The only point I was trying to make is that there are unseen costs that are added on at the governmental level, and we are largely not privvy to what they are.

There is no greater manisfestation of greed and financial recklessness than that which is demonstrated by most governments; apparently yours has ordained that cameras imported from Japan shall become another revenue source. VAT is the most obvious layer of taxation, but there are others that are less obvoius. Tarriffs vary widely throughout the world, and certainly seem to be widely different depending on where you are.

It isn't fair, but making anyone pay more is not the answer. A better solution is to have the people who are already paying more than their fair share pay less.

Workers unite!!!

700 million is more accurate.

See http://www.internetworldstats.com/stats4.htm (external link) for example, that seems to be accurate according to http://europa.eu.int …eu_glance/44/index_en.htm (external link)

I have never been one for cartel conspiracy theories but…… The price differential between Europe and the US is huge, Indeed I bought my 1D MkII (bugger can’t just say MkII now ) From B&H and I paid all the relevant import duty & VAT, it still came in a lot cheaper than the UK retail price.

While we are at it, why will Canon not support international warranties? Is Canon UK in cahoots with the UK Government to actively discourage people from sourcing the camera equipment from aboard? And if so what is in it for Canon?

This is the most ? I have used in a single post/
