Hi all,

I'm now in the market and need your advices for a good UV(0) MRC filter to protect and sealed my L lenses. I already use my hood all the time, but the price of those lenses is making me a bit paranoid about scratch... :D

I'm currently facing a dilemna between those two brands which looks very good :
- Hoya 77mm UV(0) PRO1 Super HMC Multi-Coated Haze Filter;
- B+W 77mm MRC UV 010 Filter NEW F-PRO Multi-Coated;

As you can see I set in the poll two time the same filter model for the B + W, one is in Alloy and the other in Brass, is there any noticiable difference ? The Brass is more expensive, and may be more resitant... but what else ? :(

Please let me know why did you choose one or the other.

Thanks you all in advance for your help ;-)a

Regards,
Laurent.

I've got them both in varying sizes. Neither affect image quality in any way. You may as well pick the one that you can get at the best price.

I've standardized on B+W; mine are all brass, as I get them at the same time as the lenses and that's what B&H and Adorama stock. Brass is supposed to be less subject to corrosion-welding than the alloy rings are, but it's not something I ever saw in the past with my FD lenses and Hoya filters.

I have both. The Hoyas have anodized rings mounts that should reduce galling. The B+W use brass on most of their filters except for the Slim versions. Both have excellent IQ. My preference has been Hoya/Kenko Pro 1 Digitals for standard filters and B+W MRC (KSM) for cpls. I believe both companies produce excellent filters as long as you buy the multicoated versions.

I was just about to ask how one tells the difference between a B+W UV filter (010) that uses brass or an alloy thread.

Unfortunately, a typical user can't. There are not specific markings that I can tell. You need to ask the retailer which version they are selling. Some retailers will list alloy or brass versions.

Thanks in advance.

When my choice will be done I'll order there :
- Hoya 77mm UV(0) PRO1 Super HMC Multi-Coated Haze Filter (external link)
- B+W 77mm MRC UV 010 Filter NEW F-PRO Multi-Coated BRASS (external link)

(For info: they made the disctinction bewteen Brass and Alloy, Brass is 6$ more expensive) I read great things about that shop here in the market watch section.

Laurent.

I am assuming you are planning to order from HvStar judging from the name of the filters you are quoting. Hoya is $31.90 and B+W is $55.00. Hmm, quite a significant price difference there.
