settings for flash when mounted on umbrella

hey guys

i recieved my impact umbrella stands yesterday. i was trying to play around with them, but i'm not sure how i should be setting the flash.

when the a flash like a 580/430 is pointed at an umbrella, should the zoom be on the wide end or telephoto end?

if it should be on the wide end, should the wide panel diffuser be pulled out?
