Challenge #105 - Current Places of worship

For the purpose of this challenge: A place of worship is a building or other location where a group of people come to perform acts of religious praise, honor, or devotion. Current means that they are in use now. A Mayan temple wouldn't work unless it is used now. The venue may be anywhere, any size and any faith. People may or may not be in the picture. What am I looking for? This is a subjective challenge and I'm the selector. From my standpoint, I'd like to see something that I'm not expecting. It might be beauty, emotion, humor, charm, or whatever.

I'd like to see lots of entries. If I think interest is lagging, I will bump this thread to get more interest. Moderator note: let me know if I shouldn't.

Island Temple - Palau Langkawi

As we arrived on our rented scooter, several goats ran from the shade of this temple in the tropics.

Wonderful Place of Worship

Title: Wonderful Place of Worship
Camera: Canon S2IS

Some post processing - cropping, brightness adjustment, and sharpening.

Taken in December of 2005 in a remote area of Ghana, West Africa. This place proved to me worship is a matter of the heart, for the people who met there were very sincere and exuberant about their worship.

Picture is 800x800. Couldn't find a way to crop it to a more orthodox size, but it's still within the rules. :)

Various worship places in Montreal, QC, Canada. Shot from Mt Royal. Montreal is nicknamed the city of a hundred belltowers, quote sometimes attributed to Mark Twain, due to its high number of churches.

Title: "Hallelujah!" <--- that great overture.
Came across an old photo visiting Italy. I believe it's St. Peter's Basilica. This is not a painting but a mosaic of tiles. The light streaming in from the giant windows added celestial ambiance. As if God was about to descent. Prolly strike me dead for using a puny A95 to shoot the picture and not 1D-series with L-lens. LOL!

Results of Challenge #105 - Places of worship

Folks, this has been a very interesting one for me. Here's the results:

First place-benarnold "A Place of..". It was the contrast of the ancient arch, the old gravestones, and the modern "Love" poster on the interior wall. Thanks for this, I enjoyed it.

Second place: raymondb "RE: A Place of... I liked the depth of field and yet the markings on the wall can still be discerned.

Third place: "Wonderful Place of Worship" The orderly placement of very primitively made benches is impressive. This would have been even more interesting if there were some people occupying the benches.

Comments on the other pictures follow:

Micky Daeus: interesting temple. Too bad you missed the goats.

Jeece: Super shot. I could look at that for a long time. It's something, that to me, would make a great poster to hang on a wall...

Blast: Really a very nice picture. I assume that those are your decoys out there? But it doesn't meet the requirement. Your "one on one's with G" is singular. The definition was: "A place of worship is a building or other location where a group of people come to...":) But I do like it!

Paul B: Country Church - Early Sunday. I see a few cars there. Looks like my cousin's Iowa country about mid September? I've travelled from California to work with them at harvest. They won't let me drive the combine solo, but I've gotten several hundred acres of stalk chopping and plowing done by myself.

chrysalis and delhi: Stunning sharpness and color. I've always been in awe of the artistic craftsmanship in ceilings like these.

benarnold, Challenge #106 is yours. Thanks!

Wow, thanks urcunina! This was a great topic to be my first back after a while. I loved that there was such a wide range of places, from the simplest wooden hut to the most ornate painted (and tiled) ceilings. And virtually every photo showed something completely different to the others.

Challenge #106 coming very soon.

I have to say, the 2 ceiling shots are absolutely STUNNING, delhi's being the most striking, the way the light just flows through the windows, and the creative use of the lens's 'flare' effect. All great shots, but I really wanted to especially commend that one.
