Question for 70-200 2.8 (non-IS) owners

I upgraded my 70-200 F4 to the 2.8 (non-IS) and find the zoom ring a little rough. Maybe rough is the wrong word but doesn't seem as smooth as the F4. No grinding or anything but it is almost like you can feel a worm gear missing a bit of grease.

Any help would be appreciated.

If its brand new........then give it time.

Both my f4 and f2.8 versions are nice and smooth.

My 2.8 is extremely smooth and has been since the first day.

It is brand new.

The f4 was much smoother and it was new.

Maybe I need to bring it back? Or it could be that I am being anal. I will use it for another week and see if it gets better. It is not annoying but for near $2000 CDN I expected smoooooooth.

Scottes: Been watching your thread on the new 400 prime. You now have me thinking prime instead of a 100-400 as I planned :-)

I bought my 70-200 2.8 second hand a year or two ago and zooming was - and is - very smooth.

I *do* have to post a comparison some day. Maybe I will today, but it may be a little inconclusive on things.

Yeah, I will write one...

Like Butta since day 1. My 24-70 on the other hand gets a little testy going from wide to zoom.

I'm bringing it in to the LCS in the next couple of hours to get their take on things.

I bought mine used about 4 or 5 years ago and it has been smooth the whole time. Never any problems.

Brought the lens back and the salesperson didn't quite believe me but called Canon support and was told it should be silky smooth (which it was not). The salesperson said he felt it was engaging and he could feel the gears turning like it was a positive thing. The zoom and the lens work perfectly. The point was that I thought they forgot to lube the gears (not sure how the mechanisms work). We finally agreed. So, he ordered a new one and in the meantime I can still use this one. Bad news is that the lens is backordered. Apparently, Henry's have 19 on order.

I am about to order a 20D so we will see how they can turn things around.
