White-breasted Nuthatch

These images of a White-breasted Nuthatch were taken in Prescott, Arizona. I've always liked nuthatches (who doesn't) but can't seem to get many images when they're not blinking or turning their heads in the "wrong" direction. These were, by default, my most acceptable on this particular day. Both were taken with a 30D and a 100-400.

For 'defaults' they look pretty darn good! For me, the composition, blue sky, and pose of #1 stands out.

They are hard to catch, unless they are taking a break in the shade of a tree. These look nice, better than I have ever taken of the one around here.

Very nice! We have red breasted nuthatch in Ontario, but I haven't ever seen any. I really like your first shot.

Both are wonderful captures but #1 is really outstanding. The composition, the BG and the pose of the head are well done...you have also captured nice detail in the downey like quality of the feathers on the belly. I really enjoyed viewing these. Well done.

The first image in particular sings..Exposure, pose and details against another very nice background.

As bird photographers we all know that positive or constructive feedback from other photographers on this site helps us calibrate our photo successes or misses as we try to improve our images. When we hear what others find appealing or distracting about an image, it makes us that much more aware when a new photo opportunity presents itself. Most of you favored image #1 and I actually posted it first since I like it better as well.
