I'm looking at picking up this tripod: http://www.bhphotovideo.com …B_Tripod_Legs_Black_.html (external link)

Just wondering if there is anything better you would consider in that price range? Or even something different in the same price range... I'm trying to keep my pricing below 325ish (w/o S&H). I'm pretty new at this but I'm trying to choose the proper equipment the first time as opposed to buying things twice.

Thanks,
Andrew

I have the Benro A-258n6 (external link) aluminum tripod with a bogen 488rc2 ball head and I really like it.

It's an excellent tripod, and the one I use, and I'll never, ever have to upgrade it. Go for it. Make SURE you get a good head with it, I recommend the 488RC2

I almost bought that same tripod but with the same goal of trying to buy a tripod only once I decided to cancel my order and bought a Gitzo 2941. This is one of their Basalt series tripods and cost me $405 with no shipping at Amazon. It's lighter than aluminum, slightly heavier than carbon fiber and amazing solid when set up. It also is a four-section leg which makes for a much more compact package when collapsed for storing or transport. If you anticipate packing your tripod to outdoor sites for sports or nature shoots this would be a much better choice. If your tripod needs are more studio-oriented the 055XPROB would be a fine tripod.

I mostly shoot outdoors (automotive) but I don't think I can justify spending 405 on a tripod after I just dropped 600 on a 17-40L. I have to keep some cash in my savings account!

OP, that's very wise of you to buy right instead of buy twice.

I have that pod with a 488 rc2 as recommended above. I also have 2 of the 3021bpro, which is the earlier version. They are very fine. I doubt you can beat them for quality and price.

Please speak slowly and distinctly. I have a wife and a computer, I don't need any more confusion in my life.

I LOVE my 055XBPRO with pistol grip head... I cannot see my needs ever exceeding that tripod.

If you must know...

Excellent choice! Bit heavy, but thats the price to be paid for a stable and solid tripod. I love mine!

I just received my 055XPROB and 488RC2 from UPS today. So far is looks and feels incredibly sturdy. I should get to test it pretty well tomorrow while I am out camping on an island filled with cypress trees.

Has anyone hit the scale with their 055XPROB and 488RC2 ? Also what is the max. height of this combo with out the column extended? I gather from the B and H website it should be ~163.6cm (152.8 + 10.8cm).

Don't forget to add the height of the head to the measurement. On top of that, consider how high the viewfinder is from the bottom of the camera.
