Basically I am on the cusp of booking a flight to India for 10 days. There we will visit one or two national parks (Ranthambur being one). Currently my 5D take fabulous shots but I would like more than 3fps and the crop factor will be useful too. The 30D was not worth it as cropping a 5D shot was comparable but 10mp at 1.6x would be nice as would 6.5fps. How does it perform with the 100-400? How does IQ compare at 400+ ISO? Would I be dissapointed...?

Cheers.

If you were disappointed in the 30, the 40 is not going to be all that much better. It is faster, it focuses faster, it works great with the 100-400 and the IQ is a bit better than the 30D but it's arguable as to whether it's as good or better than the 5D. So, would you be disappointed? Only you can say. I have both the 5D and the 40D and I am not disappointed with either but I have a XTi as well and that one also does not disappoint me either.

I don't have any 5D, but I read in a photo magazine here that they hadn't measured such resolution from a 10 MP camera before, as the 40D was capable of. It compared with 12 MP cameras like the significantly more expensive Canon 5D or Nikon D300, they said.

Can you provide sources? I love reading good reviews. ;):)

Can't comment on the 100-400, but I shoot a lot of wildlife with my 40D and a 300 f/4 IS with tcon. The FPS is great for what I use if for. It can make the difference of a great bird shot Vs. a mediocre one by catching, for example, the wings just right with the sun. My C1 setting is ISO 320, but I will confidently go up to ISO 1000 and beyond if I need the shutter speed. The more I use the camera, the better I like it.

I could, but it's probably not meaningful.
The test was printed in the Swedish photo magazine appropriately named FOTO.
You can download their tests via the web, but you either have to be a subscriber, in which case you've probably read it already, or pay SEK 15 by making a phone call to them.

In either case, you need to know Swedish, at least in writing.

All food for though guys, thanks. I guess the real selling points are crop factor zoom, FPS and not changing lenses constantly. Don't want to miss a shot if one comes along....Thanks.
