Looked around but couldn't find a thread on it already...

I am interested in seeing images of the same subject/composition but taken at 16mm and at 17mm on a full frame. Basically I am wondering what the difference on the wide end of the 16-35mm f/2.8L and the 17-40mm f/4L is as I am kinda stuck between which of these lenses to get. Anyone have both ;)? Or if anyone knows a good thread or site where this has already been discussed please direct me to that.

No I dont want to turn this into a debate as to which is better, they are both incredible lenses, I just need to know how much wider 16mm really is and am having trouble finding/seeing that anywhere else.

Thanks for your help everyone! :)

Wow, that makes the difference look extremely minute... Is the effect at minute when focusing on something closer?

Thank you for the link by the way.

There's an animated GIF near the top showing the difference between 16mm and 17mm (since the review is comparing against the older 17-35mm f/2.8L lens).

[The lens for 16mm is the Tokina and the 17mm lenses are the Tamron 1750 and Canon 1755.]

Oh, and here are the letter designations:
B = Tokina 16-50 F2.8 AT-X PRO DX
C = Tamron 17-50 F2.8 SP XR Di-II
D = Canon 17-55 F2.8 IS USM

You can also check the specs on Angle of View via http://www.eflens.com (external link) for the specific lenses you're thinking about, as it does vary.

Then, if you're a math whiz, you could calculate the answer to your question based upon distance to subject. (I'm not any longer)

Not enough of a differnce for me to give up my ultra sharp and beatifully coloured 17-40 for a soft in the corners Mk.I or an expensive Mk.II

The difference is very small. Don't forget at 17mm the focal length/shutter speed rule makes the F/4 17-40 quite fast. I shoot in low light with my 17-40 all the time. I use it as a night time, no flash, walk around in the city with no problems.

people will always try to stop you doing the right thing if it is unconventional
Full frame and some primes.
