Their is no difference.

The Mk2N is comperable with the 30D when it comes to ISO noise.
The 30d is comperable to the 40D.
If you want lower noise go for the 5D or the 1DMKIII

Go back one page in the threads, there is a very long one about this.

I disagree with the analysis here - I have a 20D (same essential system as the 30D with regard to sensor, focus and noise), the 40D and the 1DMKIIN. The 1DMKIIN is much better at ISO noise that the 20D and 30D. The 40D comes closer, but the 1DMKIIN still edges it out. Top ISO performers are still the 5D and 1DMKIII though.

Hmmm i only know what has been investigated for many times!
ISO performance of the 1DMKII (N) is the same on the 40D and 1DMKII!

The performance of the 40D (read all the threads) is the same as the 30D!
That means that the performance of the 40D is better but because of the 2MP extra of the 40D the noise is the same as whith the 30D!

I think the 20D is a bit better than the 40D and 1D II, and the 1D IIn is a tiny winy bit better than the 20D. :)
And then the 5D is a bit better than the 1D IIn, and the 1D III is quite better than the 5D.

Haha.

Lots of "bits"?

Pretty sure the N is EXACTLY the same image wise as the non-N.

Well you can read threads. I shoot with the cameras (weddings, events, fairs and festivals). You can base your opinion off threads, I'll base mine off real world experience working with the cameras. The 1DMKIIN (and the 1DMKII) are 8 mp, 1.3 crop cameras. The larger pixel size gives them a significant edge over the 20D and 30D when it comes to noise. In fact, their noise levels favor very comparably with the 5D for well exposed normal ISO shots. The 5D has the edge when it comes to high ISO levels (above 800).

The 40D does quite nicely, but the extra two megapixels squeezed onto a 1.6 crop sensor still puts it at an ISO perormance level slightly above that of the 20D and 30D, but still not equal to the 1DII and 1DIII series based on my experience when shooting with them.

That's certainly true. :) I guess what sometimes confuses me, though, is why people parrot what they read in threads as opposed to offering opinions based on actually shooting and working with the specified equipment. One restriction I place on myself is that I won't offer an opinion on any equipment that I haven't actually owned or used - that's why you never see me commenting about third party lenses. :)

I have shot the 40D since Oct I believe and the camera handles noise very very well. But I think most higher end cameras will as long as you get solid exposure. Proper exposure is the most important part (as everyone knows).

Canon has always been known as a camera that handles noise well, Nikon finally got into that game with a few of their latest cameras.

I never owned the mkIIn but did own the mkII and 30D at the same time, they seemed equal IQ wise, this would include high ISO's. I could see where the 1.3 would edge the 1.6 slightly but I think it is neglidgible.

With well exposed, low ISO photos, the difference is, as you say, negligible. However, when you have to push the cameras to the edge, higher ISO's and lower light, the lower pixel density will make a difference with noise in the shadow areas and overall image quality.

Of course, with the 1DMKIII and the 5D you're sitting pretty good for high ISO shots right now. :)
