Does anyone have pictures taken with the 70-200mm f/2.8 EX APO IF HSM and the Sigma 2x EX APO Extender? I am considering this combination in order to have a faster lens for baseball photography at night where speed is more important then lenght and a long lens for nature stuff.

I actually do.. but they are really bad.

I took these when I first had the 10D... and when making the transition.. one can often forget tht ISO is set in camera..

It happens that the only images I have on line that wre taken with this exact combo on a 10D were taken mistakenly @ 1600 ISO in jpeg (not raw)

So... I don't know if this will help at all.

and all the great blue shots on this page;

These also were some of the first jpegs I ever shot with the 10D and uploaded... so the post processing was... unslkilled to say the least.

Thanks CDS. I was hoping for some shots at a lower ISO but these are not bad for 1600. Did you do any sharpening on those? How would you rate this combo? I know it will not be 100-400L quality but I like the versatility of a fast smaller zoom and a long slower zoom that may have somewhat better optics then my 170-500MM (intend to keep the monster anyways as an additional big zoom for my wife to shoot).

It wasn't a bad set up at all.. but I had purchased the 50-500mm Zoom fisrt.. so I essentially never used the 70-200mm and 2X except on very rare occasions.. thus the lack of example photos.

I don't hink this is the right direction if you are looking for something better than the 170-500mm. I doubt you'd get much better image quality with the 2X... and you'd lose 100mm (although the 70-200mm is a great lens.. using it with a 2X just is not the best way to go)

If you were to take the cost of the 70-200mm, and 2X T-con and the $$ you might make selling the 170-500mm... then you'd have the $$ for a 100-400mm.

Just a thought.

P.S. I don't think they were sharpened much... I don't recall what I used to lower the noise either.

I agree CDS, the issue is that the 100-400 is not going to be fast enough for the baseball photography which is the main reason I am considering the 70-200.

I have the Sigma 70-200 and the 2X Con. I believe I used the 2X with that lens on the following photo. I don't use the 2X too much unless I have to, but it's not too bad. I do use the 1.4x more though.
