sooo ill be heading to the chicago auto show in a month to play around and check out some cars. im also planning on going to a couple local car shows this summer as well.

was just wondering what your guys' thoughts were on the 10-22 for this use or if you think the 28-135mm is sufficient?

id LOVE to sell the 28-135 & skip the 10-22 for a 24-70 but dont feel like dropping the loot.

also might just rent the 10-22 for the chicago auto show and call it good ...

30D & 28-135 kit lens, 50mm F/1.8 MKII, monopod, tipod w/pan tilt head, 430EX w/ sto-fen omni bounce,

On the brown truck, due 10/26 ... 70-200 2.8L IS :D

Dunno, i've never been to a car show. If you want to buy something the Tamron 17-50 might be worth considering. Or the Canon 17-55 F2.8 IS but it's kinda expensive.

The 10-22 is definitely what you want. 24 or 28 just isn't wide enough. I just got mine so I haven't used it at any shows yet. Used my 17-70 in the past and really wanted wider.

I go to the Chicago auto show every year, hoping to get some buddies from Cincy to go with me again this year.

I love using the 10-22mm EFS at the autoshow, but it's not my most used lens. Because of the wide angle effect many of the cars just appear too distorted.

I use an 18-xx zoom most often. I used a Sigma 18-125mm DC in the past most often, last year I only carried my 17-40L with me. It's some what dark at the auto show so I usually use ISO800.

I have a new 17-55mm EFS now so that will be my new go to lens, but the 10-22mm will be in the bag nonetheless.

I would lean harder toward selling the 28-135mm for a wider zoom like the 17-85mm EFS IS or Tamron 17-50mm.

Else if you have the money I would look toward adding a Sigma 10-20mm or Tamron 11-18mm to complement the Canon 28-135mm in a 2 lens kit. Else if you have the cash go for the Canon.

Adding a cheap 18-55mm IS f/3.5-5.6 to the 28-135mm would be a great alternative for the autoshow IMO.

I like using lensprotogo.com for my lens rentals when I do rent a piece of glass. The 28-135mm IS EF is a nice lens I wouldn't sell that lens unless you find the 28mm end not wide enough for general use.

Definitely use the 10-22. No way on the 28-135- 28 is definitely not wide enough. Don't forget you need to get really close to the cars because of the people. The Sigma 10-20 is far cheaper than the Canon but has a better build and I personally think is at least optically equivalent.

The 24-70 wouldn't be that great for an auto show either. I'd say, ideally the only two lenses to consider would be something in the 10-20 range or the 16-35/17-40L.

I was at the Philadelphia Auto Show last year and used the Sigma 10-20. Check out the results: http://www.cyclingcaptured.com/gallery/2444312 (external link) I think the 10-20 was the perfect choice.

I'm going to the Philly Auto Show again this year. I will definitely be bringing my 16-35L and Sigma 10-20.

im tempted to get the 10-20/10-22 as ive been wanting to get a wide angle for a bit but not sure if i want to pick one up yet ...

The 10-22 would be a good focal length. However as it is not a focal length I would need much I have never bought one. I've done the Chicago auto show with my 17-55 IS and found it to work great.

I would agree with this. My uses of a wide angle in the past were for people group shots and coastal landscapes. I am likely in the minority here, but I tend to not like the perspective of a wide angle for focal lengths greater than 28mm (on film/FF). Very rarely did I like shooting as wide as 24mm. So, with a 1.6x crop body, a 17-xx lens (yielding the FOV equivalent of a 27mm on FF) would be sufficient.

I agree with the wide angle not looking very good for subjects like cars...tis better to use a longer lens and go to the show on less busy day IMO. And a kit lens is way cheaper to use then purchasing a UWA zoom.

unless you are going on a press pass, getting clear pictures of cars will be difficult. lots of people everywhere. having been to the auto show as a spectator and press, if you are going on the general pass, go super early or go super late. middle of the week like Tuesday/Wednesday is best. i used 17-40 for most of my coverage.

I have had a efs 10-22mm, it is a lens everyone must have anyhow, or an equivalent, but it is a great lens that you can use for so many things, just get it :)

If you can, get the 10-22. One of my most favourite lenses

all you are going to get are snap shots of cars at motorshows, so with a 10-22 you'll get distorted looking snap shots of cars lol. sometimes you are better going for close up detail shots

10-22 + right angle finder is one of the most creative hardware combinations I know.

You need to train your brain to look for, and see, the opportunities. The 10-22 [or equivalent] plus the angle finder make it happen.
