Hi! I shot this bird today at about 1800 meters in the swiss Alps. I thought at first that it could be a now bunting but:

- wrong shape of head
- far out of its range and there was a whole group

Any idea?

I think it's a White-winged Snowfinch

I was just looking at my pics of snow buntings, and this looks an awful lot like them. Never seen a Snowfinch though.

Hi - it's a Snow Finch. One of only a very few passerines which would be in this vicinity at this time of year.

The head shape and color is different from the bunting. Besides, it would be an incredible find as we are waaaay too south for them...

Exactly, and it was with another of the few birds being able to live in such conditions: Alpine Accentor... (https://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=436607)

Previous shots and the following one were taken handheld with 100-400 and 12mm extension ring

DDA - beautiful shots - fabulous light! We're off the Switzerland early March, staying in Lausanne. We won't have a car but will have train/bus/boat passes. Where do you recommend to go for birds/wildlife? :D

1800 meters altitude or distance from the bird? If it's the latter, you must have a killer lens!

Thank you Sheryl. Train/bus/boat pass is very efficient in Switzerland. Very close to Lausanne, you can go to Preverenges for good bird-watching (it is on the lake shore). You can also go to Yverdon on Lake Neuchâtel where there are a few good spots. Finally, I would advice Fanel/Cudrefin which is further away (and maybe more difficult without car) on the same Lake. You should also make sure you go up on the mountains (Wallis)... PM me for more details ;-)a
