That's what has been claimed.
In Tucson, Arizona, when the 6th Ave. underpass flooded, there were some guys with VWs that used to swim on through.
Have heard that it was hard on the starter though.

I think this one is returning from the grave.

I always thought those beetles could float (external link)!

When I was stationed in Singapore and mate and myself were wandering around along Orchard Road, going north out of the city centre. There was a VW agent there and they were showing just how a Beetle could actually float. It was bobbing about in a round swimming/paddling pool. Being right cheeky sods we went up to it and just gently pushed it around and yes, it was floating quite well. My mate was round the other side from me, and making sure that the salesman was watching, I called across to him that I wondered what it was like inside and reached for the door handle? There was a shriek of abject horror from the salesman and he came rushing out shouting "NO, NO, NO don't open the door". We just looked at him quite innocently and asked hwy not? He begged us not to and rushed back inside and reappeared with the keys and locked it.

I never did understand is concern?

Oh yes, and https://blog.heritagepartscentre.com …pt-photographs-uncovered/ (external link)

Edit : - I forgot to mention. I was talking about a VW Beetle and not the thing that they produce these days and trade on that famous name. It may be called the same, BUT a real Beetle has a flat 4 air cooled engine in the back! I know this because I have owned 2. A 1956 rag top 1100cc and a 1955 1100cc saloon in to which I shoe-horned a VW Variant 1500cc twin carb lump. It didn't arf shift too

My ambition for a good while is to grow old disgracefully. So far my wife tells me that I am doing really well!

Great stories (yours and the link). I love the polite way they describe it as a "pope's nose" model. Others would have a more apt description involving the V of VW!

Still waiting for the wisdom they promised would be worth getting old for.

A bloke I knew had actually tried that crossing in a Beetle. I'm not sure if he made it, but after all he was a Pongo ;-)a

A Pongo is one of our army brethren Charles. Pongo is also the Latin for the orangutang, but I'm sure that is just a coincidence

A Fishead is an RN sailor,

Penguins are Fleet Air Arm, all flap, no fly

Royal Air Force are crab fats. Something to do with the colour of our uniform, when it was blue that is.

Rock Apes are R.A.F.Regiment. That come from when they were formed in WW2 and took to the rocks in Gibraltar to protect the island and airfield. Something to do with the Barbary apes that are there too.
