This is a customized 1960's Oldsmobile Tornado. It was the first GM front wheel drive and it was very powerful....back then the Tornado used transverse mounted V8's of either 425 and 455 cubic inches.

I'm pretty sure they were not transverse mounted, rather they were one of the cars that used the FWD/transaxle version of the turbo 400 trans with a longitudinal mounted engine.

The back version looks to have two Tornado trailing (non driven) axles with a modified, extended....'bedoored' (my word ) station wagon body from the same era. Pretty accurate information on the engines & Toranado body work. Looks like a 1968? I'm betting the frame used to make this car was from a GMC Motorhome. They were all 26', used the Oldsmobile drive trains mentioned above, and had the two rear axles just to carry the weight. naturally they were front wheel drive. The Captain and crew finally got their stuff together, now if we can only remember where we left it.

The back version looks to have two Tornado trailing (non driven) axles with a modified, extended....'bedoored' (my word ) station wagon body from the same era.It reminds me of some of the airport limousines used back then...which were modified, extended station wagons ...sometimes with 6 to 8 doors (3 to 6 on each side)...but I've never seen one ...modified with an Tornado base...usually back then...something like..for example... a Chevy wagon would be used as a foundation. Nice pix documenting this probably...one off..custom. Les Actually, the Toronado and Riviera did not use a transverse mounted engine, it was in the normal, water pump at front, cylinders on the side configuration like any other GM car of the time. It was front wheel drive, but the connection to the torque convertor was at the rear of the engine by the firewall. Here's a link to a pic - hopefully it works: 60D / EOS Elan / 15-85 IS USM / 70-200 f4L IS / 50 1.4 / 430ex / Fujifilm X100s / Slik U-212 (a genuine antique, like me....)

Les, I take it you're a bit of an Oldmobile fan too? ![]() -Bruce I think you're right about the GMC motorhome.
