Actually, the Toronado and Riviera did not use a transverse mounted engine, it was in the normal, water pump at front, cylinders on the side configuration like any other GM car of the time. It was front wheel drive, but the connection to the torque convertor was at the rear of the engine by the firewall. Here's a link to a pic - hopefully it works:

Right you are about the '60's FWD Oldsmobile Tornado not having a transverse engine...brain fade on my part I guess.

The '60's Buick Riviera did not use a transverse engine as you said...but in the case of the '60's Rivera...the Riv was Rear Wheel Drive, unlike it's Olds sibling which was FWD. Also back in those days...Oldsmobile used Oldsmobile engines...Buick used Buick engines.

I liked the old days when each division developed their own particular engines. Some might say I'm stuck in the past...I do recall the past with some warmth.

Yep, you're right. The Riviera used the same basic body shell as the Toronado, but remained rear wheel drive.

I looked at the picture of this same caboose on your web site....what is that thing doing sitting out in the middle of seemingly nowhere?

Back when the railroads were phasing out cabooses they auctioned a couple of them off. The guy that owned the land bought it to use as a cabin and had it trucked out and lifted into the middle of the field by crane. It's been abandoned for about a decade, but they did make sure that there's a gate in the fence and a bit of a path so you can get to it.

I found this between the Meteor crater and the I-40 during my trip in the States last month.

Railroad cars are often used in ranching, as storage for farmers on their fields. They are a pretty common site here in the ranch lands of Texas.

^^ Well, I learned something today. I do know where there is a caboose turned into an apartment here in TN, but it's a pretty rare thing. Thanks.
