Started with a Practica L2, then moved on to a Canon AE1program, Canon A1, Canon EOS600, and now use a Canon Rebel XT, next upgrade will be either the Canon 40D or what ever relaces it

Since I am still a beginner my d40x now is my first ever Slr. I should say that this camera is good for novices like me.

oops I did not see tis thread and started another one....

I have had many many cameras over the the 34+ years that I have been taking photographs, for many of those years I used the same pair of Pentax MX camera and a Bronica ETRS. I have part exchanged as I have upgraded but I still have my first ever "serious" camera set up. To put this kit into context for some of our "younger" readers this is totally manual.

  • Manual Focus
  • Manual film advance
  • No inbuilt meter
  • Manually set shutter speed
  • No automatic iris step down (compose the shot then manually turn a ring to set f/stop (blacking out viewfinder in the process))
  • The timing was clockwork

And I still managed to take some pictures that compare (or better) my 1D MkIIN and 5D

I'm currently using my first (d)SLR, a Rebel XT with 50mm 1.8 (and kit). I still have a long way to go! Recently purchased a flash, a telephoto and a camera bag! I think I'm set for the next couple of months(;)) Had a keen interest in photography 'bout 4 years ago (I'm fairly young) and have been sticking with Canon ever since (2 P&S and the XT).

My first SLR was a nikon D50 i bought just over 2 years ago, before that it was some cheap 3mp olympus P&S with no manual options whatsoever. I kept the D50 for about 6 months then moved to a D200 and only kept that for another 6 months till i moved to my 5D. :)

Looks like my fav Canon FD setup, body (sometimes 2), 28, 50 and 85. Sometimes I would add a 17 or 135 too.

I still have my AE-1 that I purchased in 1976. My daughter used it last semester in a photography class and it performed flawlessly. My first camera was a hand-me-down Yashica rangefinder and I used it until the shutter failed. My brother bought it used in about 1967 and gave it to me in 1969 when he bought his first SLR.

Nice camera.

Well I'm young but my first SLR was a Mamiya nc1000 which I still have.
I guess it is a bit more advanced than your Pentax since it has a lightmeter (which still works).

The rest is all manual:
-manual focus
-split prism (awesome feature)
-manual shutter
-manual film advance

That's pretty nice Neil. Sadly my first camera is not that old, but I still have it...the Rebel X/S.

First camera was a used Canon TX. Fully manual, just loved it. Wish I still had it. I've been so tempted to pick one up used for memory sake.

Still have my AE-1. Along with a T70 and a pair of pretty cherry T90s...
