Hi there,
I was wondering if it is possible to use an Olympum FL-40 flash on a Canon EOS 30D Camera.

If the flash unit provides full manual mode, you will be able to use it that way via the central contact of the hot shoe. Since the communications interface and protocol are incompatible, you will not have access to any advanced flash functions that would be available with the E-TTL flash units from Canon and some 3rd party suppliers.

If the Olympus flash has a mode that lets it act like a “computer flash”, that is, it lets you choose an aperture value and then calculates the duration of the flash lighting based on its own measurements, that could work too.

It looks like the trigger voltage (external link) is OK, so it shouldn't fry your camera.

I've used a T32 and T10 ring flash on my 30D without problems (well - the T10 is a bit bright sometimes, even at f/22 and set to GN4 - why can't I have ISO25 Canon?)

You'll have to use the guide number, or trial and error to set the aperture (keeping the shutter speed below 1/250); or if the flash has a normal-auto setting, where it determines flash duration itself for a known aperture/ISO, that works too.

The trigger voltage would not be an issue with the 30D anyway, for it can handle up to 250V.
That should be enough for all except maybe the most ancient flash gear ;-)a

... so I thought it was better to check. That list I linked to has some good reading. Some of those units have trigger voltages over 290 V!
