5D gripped & love it. 40D ungripped to make it smaller as this is my camera I use when photography is not necessarily the sole reason for a trip out (excursion you understand, not LSD! ;))

Before I bought the 1DIIn, i had a grip on both my 20D and 5D. I take a lot of portrait oriented photos and like the dual controls.

I recently took a trip and left the grip at home for my 5D to conserve space, I didn't realize how much I would miss it when it was not available! I also learned to appreciate the added battery in the grip.

Today bought a grip for 30D, damn wish i did that a lot earlier. So much easier to shoot in portrait. But price for Canon batteries is crazy, 90 euros each.

Grip was the best purchase for my XTi makes it feel so much better.

I recently took the grip off my XTi just for this reason. It makes the XTi almost incognito.

What JCH77 said. For any rebel series camera, it's a must. I got an off brand on Amazon along with two batteries for the same price as the canon brand grip. The company claims to cast from the same molds canon uses, and I love having the grip.

One of main reasons I returned 40D was the fact that after using it for over a week, I picked up my old XTi and it felt soooo much better. I have average sized hands, btw.
In other words, what's "a must" really depends on personal preference.

Great batteries at a small fraction of the cost of Canon's.

Well, I have had a grip for my 5D for 8 months now, and while I like it for event type shooting, I find I would rather have it off for adventuring about, whether trekking through an urban landscape, or hiking and canoeing in a remote landscape. The camera sits nicer without the grip on too, instead of falling on its nose. I find now that I have it on maybe 20% of the time max. I doubt I would get another with the next non-pro body I get.

No grip for me, I like to travel light and a grip would do just the opposite.

Yes. I have a grip for my 400D and will buy another for the 40D when I decide to upgrade.

I agree to this comment... I've been a drummer for 24 years and have very strong wrists but the grip just makes the body feel complete.

Beez.
As a drummer myself for the past 34 years, which grip?
Traditional or matched? That is the question.

I got a cheap grip from the 'bay, £24 delivered but it does the job. Has a built in high capacity battery, good for about 1500 shots (compared to 300 with the stock one). Makes handing much better and adds a second shutter button for portrait shots.

Build quality is good, but not amazing... goes well with my 400D.

Couple of pics, sorry for the quality they were taken on my phone... and the messy desk.

I liked using a grip with my old D200, but since I switched to my 5D, I prefer to shoot without one. Partly because the Canon grips seem really cheap to me, and the 5D feels pretty good without a grip IMO.
