I haven't taken the grip off my camera since I bought it.

Ditto.

The small cameras need the grip IMO, but I have never used one with the 5D or 40D as, for me, they don't add anything other than extra weight and size which I can do without.

I had a grip for my 350D and loved it. The 20D doesn't need a grip so much - I might get one if I get a particularly heavy telephoto, but right now I'm enjoying having a semi-compact camera... (It's odd that because of its extra size, the 20D is actually more compact than the 350D+grip)

Yes, I have a grip for my 30D - it is sitting in my closet. I am unhappy with the way it feels - I don't like the design.

Don't have one.

...but that's only because I haven't gotten the chance to get it yet... :)

I have one for my 5D, I use it now about half the time. There are very many times for me that the smaller size without is advantageous, weight and size wise.

I don't have one for my 20D.

I have a grip on my 30D, which I purchased specifically for a sports job I had on. I find it a nice feature to have, and I occasionally use the vertical release. But, I still find myself using the horizontal shutter release, even if I am shooting vertical.

I don't have one on my 5D, and I don't think it is necessary, the camera feels good, with the 70-200 I have mounted on it most of the time.

List of cameras I have or have had.
Minolta 7000
Minolta 800SI
Canon Elan 7
Canon 10D
Canon 30D

I have had a grip for all of them. They fit better in my hand & with the extra capacity for batteries makes the shooting last longer. Second set of controls makes it great when shooting in portrait. Wouldn't not have one.

Had one for the 20D. I used them on my film cameras since they added functionality there (auto-wind rather than manual), but it's really not necessary on my digitals.
