I have a grip on my 5D because I thought it would give me extra battery power/longer shoot time.......truthfully I didn't know if I was going to need or like it or not when I first bought it.......so far I do like the fact that I'm running off 2 batteries, and it hasn't come off yet. The size means nothing to me since it sit on a tripod most of the time anyway.......If I receive the added attention I have read about in this thread my mind may change. I just recently upgraded from a Kodak DX7590.

Canon EOS 5D, Battery Grip BG-E4, Canon EF 24-105 1:4 L IS USM, Canon Speedlite 430 EX, and a very old but trusty Tripod

No - I don't need one, having become comfortable shooting in portrait mode back in the 70's.

I rather put the extra money into lenses. Besides, I like to travel light and that extra weight would just multiply itself over the course of a long wedding day. I know there are those who wouldn't leave home without one and that's cool. It would just give me no advantage.

Excellent points made here, which I'd forgotten. I've never exhausted those nice, small lightweight batteries although I will change them 6 hours into a wedding for some added "insurance." I always carry a few extra.

.......The other reason expounded for the BG, of course, is the two batteries. Frankly I have not ever exhausted even one battery in the course of a day's shooting, even covering weddings. And if I did deplete a battery, there is far less bulk and weight to carry all day, if I simply keep one or two spare batteries in the bag!

Every non 1 series camera is too small for my hands--IMO

Got a grip on life!

Got a grip on my camera, too. It is handy for things like my last vacation when I shot hundreds of pictures per day and already had my pockets full of enough stuff without putting spare batteries there too. The only time that it has been a problem is when using my Wimberly Sidekick and then it limits the elevation angle to about 60 degrees. There is a work-around, but it is a PITA.

I use them off and on. I mainly use it on my 5D when shooting sports where the camera is in portrait orientation and the extra set of controls is very helpful.

I know a lot of people like a grip, but for me why make the thing any bigger than it needs to. My 20D is way larger than my old film cameras.

You'll get the same life from two batteries whether one's in the camera and one's in the bag or both are in the grip.

Bumping this old thread.... Dont know why as it seems a 50/50 battle across the board on this one, but I wanted to say that after having a grip for my 5D and now getting the 40D I am debating as to whether or not I actually want a grip for the 40D. Im not so sure its worth it to me and Im even thinking of selling my 5D grip. I actually prefer the feel of holding the camera with out the grip in landscape mode and anytime im in portrait mode while it is nice that I have the second set of controls, I am reminded each time how much I dislike how cheap and clunky the grip feels in my right hand stuck to the bottom of the camera. I also really dislike how wobbly gripped bodies are when on a tripod. Also with the grip on and the camera mounted to a camera flip bracket, or a stroboframe flash bracket things just dont seen to line up properly and are always off center when the grip in on. Just wanted to add my 2 cents.
