From what ive seen it really all depends on the actual camera as to how good or bad the grip looks on it.

Thats true, Canon definitely did a better job with the 5D grip than they have with the 20D/30D/40D grip. The 5D's is made of magnesium, and it has rubber stuff on the finger and palm rests. The 5D's grip also matches the contour of the body, unlike the 20D/30D/40D grip.

Yes those are similar images to what ive seen on google image search, what have they done with that 40D grip, the right hand side on that image just doesnt match the body in the slightest, its almost like its a 400D grip, I would even go as far as to say it makes it look very similar to a gripped 350/400D.

Where as the 5D's grip looks a lot better & while it might be quite expensive its great that its made out of magnesium alloy the same as the 5D's body, much more professional looking too

no grip for me...I've NEVER run out of batteries (shooting with two bodies helps)...if I ever went to Africa for a few weeks (which I almost did...*sniff*) I'd probably get one not for the feel or the look but for having the extra battery power.

This is exactly what I am talking about. The right (camera left) side of the 5D's grip is a continuation of the body's shape. If you squint it almost looks like a 1D body. The 40D's looks more like a stand or a base than an extension of the body.

I personally have gone to grips for my wedding bodies and enjoy not having to worry about batteries during a wedding. Now I need a 16gig cf card to keep up with my grip.

My complaint about the 40D battery grip isn't the profile, or how it matches the contours of the body. My complaint is how deep it is. The battery grip extends forward as far as the grip on the main body, but also extends backwards about 1 cm. This makes the feeling totally different holding the camera in landscape versus portrait. I'd prefer if the grip was flat to the back of the camera (actually slightly contoured like the thumb rest on the body), and the front had the same curve as the grip on the body.

Now, it seems to me that they went with this design so that they could the batteries in front to back, rather than side to side. But I don't know what motivated that. Given the gap between the two batteries, it looks like there would be more than enough room to turn them sideways.

As a question for all the grip users out there: How many of you use the battery grip for handling (vertical shooting, balance, etc.) and how many need the extra battery life?

Personally, the number of times I've run out of juice in a day of shooting with 1 battery I can count on one hand, and it seems that carrying an extra battery in a pocket is a far lighter solution for handling those odd days. On the other hand, after only a few minutes of trying to shoot vertically with a 70-200 and a flash attached, I find the battery grip a godsend.

Once I had a grip on my Rebel XT it seemed to complete the camera and it never came off. I sold the grip with the camera and have felt the 40D just doesn't need it the way the XT did. I have not had any battery issues but I always keep two spares in the bag. About the only thing I come close to missing is the camera controls shooting portrait. No plans to get a grip for the 40D right now.

When I use a grip, I almost never keep 2 batteries in it.

I guess I don't really care how it looks - not making a fashion statement.

The only reason I use a grip is when I have to shoot portrait for a long time (i.e. sports). Much easier with the extra set of controls. The extra weight and bulk is a detriment.
