I guess I don't really care how it looks - not making a fashion statement.

100% agree, however we're talking about a $1000+ camera. The design (and ergonomic) shortcuts taken on the battery grip are a bit frustrating. Not saying I can't live with it, but Canon could have done way better.

I dont keep up with the latest fashion trends, hell I wouldnt know what was fashionable even if it bit me on the bum! ;-)a

But saying that the 30/40D &350/400D grips looks HORRID!! :-p like some aftermarket addon purchased from China.. Canon have done an excellent job with the 5D grip, it seems to me they MAY have designed the grip for the 5D & spent more money on that as its more expensive & they get more returns on that investment, where as the 30/40D grips are cheaper to purchase & may be outsourced to a chinese company, but then I could be talking rubbish ;-)a its the normal procedure these days though.

Having a grip on my 40D makes sense in so many ways that it is a no-brainer for me. It adds so many great benefits that when I place an order for a new camera body I always order the grip as well. having the extra battery means that I just keep on shooting without fear of having a battery poop out on me. I have fairly large hands and the grip feels so much better to me. I like the additional heft of the grip and the camera is much more stable when I switch around to a portrait shot and have the additional shutter release and additional buttons to change my focus point. There is a reason the top camera bodies have grips built into them.

I wouldn't be without one on my 5D, have in a 1D serries body as my main shooter, I found it strange not having one on the 5D so went out and bought one.

I was out shooting with POTN members on Sunday and was shooting from like 12pm till about 8pm and just kept finding myself using the grip more and more.

Final verdict, Gripped 5D........love it.

Thats true, Canon definitely did a better job with the 5D grip than they have with the 20D/30D/40D grip. The 5D's is made of magnesium, and it has rubber stuff on the finger and palm rests. The 5D's grip also matches the contour of the body, unlike the 20D/30D/40D grip.

Yes those are similar images to what ive seen on google image search, what have they done with that 40D grip, the right hand side on that image just doesnt match the body in the slightest, its almost like its a 400D grip, I would even go as far as to say it makes it look very similar to a gripped 350/400D.

Where as the 5D's grip looks a lot better & while it might be quite expensive its great that its made out of magnesium alloy the same as the 5D's body, much more professional looking too

The BG-ED3 grip for the D60 and 10D fits the contours of the camera much like the 5D grip. I'm a bit disappointed with the way the grips fit on the 20/30/40D. I've put grips on my cameras for years and I just puled the trigger on a 40D today. Included in the order was a BG-E2N.

One way to minimize the appearance of the grip is to use an "L" bracket on the camera. It tends to hide the fact the grip doesn't match the contours of the camera. I'll be getting one for the 40D in the near future.

A grip - not a chance in hell - for me it serves no purpose. I have strong flexible wrists from playing the piano for sixty years. I can rotate the body either way with no effort.

I agree to this comment... I've been a drummer for 24 years and have very strong wrists but the grip just makes the body feel complete.

Ive got one on the 40D, previously had it on the 20D and before that I had one on the 400D. Ive got rather large hands, so its more to make holding the camera comfortable.

My dad also has one on his 5D, 400D and we have one on our pentax k10D.

Thats why the 5D was invented, people were in need of a professional full frame camera without the massive body, but at least we now have a choice, the 5D without a grip is a smaller more lighter alternative to a 1 series, add the grip & your back to 1 series size & weight, (well almost) ;)
