Wanting to ease back into shooting this new year, I decided to shoot close to home. Literally a 1 minute walk from my house.

1 they walked on sheer ice in slippery shoes. I was happy nobody fell.

4 a bridge, of course you gotta use it.

5 more dangerous creek walking

6 they were really nervous to start, but we got them to relax.

by the end my hands were absolutely frozen. I hate shooting with gloves on, and metal bodied cameras get cold FAST. Maybe I should have a rebel just for outdoor winter shoots... lol.

Great images! The one the bridge, I am not a big fan of the toning.
On the first image, where was the flash placed? i am having a hard time trying to figure it out.

Love the texture of 1, lighting in 2, and framing in 3. Good start for the year, Lloyd.
And, I think I see your house there...

Great series of pics. I still need to learn how to better shoot into the sun light.

Yes, I only used off-cam flash. I never had a flash in my hotshoe for the shoot, only pocketwizards!

yeah they were cold. I was too. I hate shooting with gloves on, and metal cameras really make your hands cold!

The flash was to my left in 1. The shadows on the wall are from the sun, not the flash. I wanted the shadows there so I made sure I didn't wash it out with flash.

Only 3 had no flash.

Once the sun fell, the light was so even and soft, just like in pic 4. Most photographers love that, but I don't. The light was really even in 3 too, but I used flash to create a mix of even, highlights, and shadows to add depth. Then we climbed up the hills to get as high as we could so we could find more harsh sunlight. And I don't use diffusers, I blast 'em with bare flash. I guess I'm like the antithesis of 'standard' photography. :)

thanks dude... hahaha, and yeah, you ALMOST can see my house in some pics. You'd never guess this place is just outside of downtown.

yes, practice this. Many people are scared of harsh direct sun. If you can conquer that then you are set. If you are a wedding shooter, you have to be able to shoot in all conditions. I find overcast days extremely boring..
