Here's two reasons I like my Newton:

1. It doesn't add much to the camera/lens. Wraps around it.

2. It folds flat.

Any chance of posting a pic with the bracket setup in portrait mode?

I have a pic of it in landscape and then right beside it going into portrait...but not full portrait. It at least gives you an idea of what the flip action looks like.

And while I'm at it, here's the quick release module you can get from Newton (optional) that I highly recommend, because it's better to tug on solid metal than a plastic/metal foot.

That does help. Thanks!

You need an off camera cord to attach the flash to. The cord then attaches to the bracket.

Awesome, Im probably going to order one of each of these and give it a try. I just have one more issue which I have emailed newton about... I am married to the Bogen RC4 quick release system and while Newton offers an RC2 solution I wanted to know from them if I could use the Bogen 394 with the Newton to keep my quick release convenience. Heres a pic:

IMAGE: http://www.bhphotovideo.com/images/items/5563.jpg

In the past whenever I have tried to make a flash bracket "Bogen RC4 compliant" I only failed as it sets everything off center from the flash and thats not what I want. Hopefully there is some way to do what Newton did with the RC2 and their brackets with the RC4 system. We'll see. If there is Ill order one right now and sell the Stroboframe Pro-RL!

You can attach any QR baseplate on the underside of a Newton bracket, and the tripod hole in the bracket is aligned with the tripod screw so that there is no lateral displacement from the normal L-R alignment of camera to tripod. There is a minor F-R offset.

Yea and its that offset that I really dont want... I am assuming that the adaptor Newton designed to work the the RC2 system is offset to compensate for the quick release system... Why oh why does everyone leave out the RC4 system??? :(

Very hard to avoid any offset...the only way would be if there was an extra long tripod screw that goes up thru the baseplate, thru the Newton, into the camera tripod socket. And then some idiot would try to use the extra long screw with only the baseplate or only the Newton, punch out the bottom of the camera tripod socket, and sue somebody for their stupidity!

Well here is what I got back from Mr. Newton... Not too impressed with his lack of detail, but I guess he answered the question...

Cannot mount to the CR brackets. Might be able to mount to the FR2 but it depends on the shape of the receptor.

I am very interested in buying a Newton flash bracket, in particular the
DI400CR for use with my Canon 5D and BG-E4 battery grip and Canon 580EX
II flash. However I am curious to know if there it a way to add to the
bracket support for the Bogen RC4 quick release system. I have seen that
Newton offers a Bogen RC2 solution, but I am very much married to the
RC4 system and can not switch now. I know that the system can be
purchased separately as the Bogen 394 set
( http://www.bhphotovideo.com …etails&Q=&sku=5563&is=REG (external link) )
but in the past when I have tried to connect that
unit to a flash bracket it threw everything else off and ultimately
didn't work for me. Is there anyway I can make this work? Thanks for the help!

-Ben

Actually, there are two was to use a different QR on a Newton....

First would be to connect the QR to the Newton base, just as you would attach the base to a camera. Then the QR qould snap on to what ever QR base plate that it used.

Here is what I originally used with the FR2...

When I got my FR2, Robert had only adapted it to the Arca QR. He made the first (I believe) for me....

You can see that it can be adjusted to center the camera on the flash (just as the regular Newton QR can)

The RC2 QR plate at the bottom of both these images is so I can snap the bracket on to a tripod (which, of course, uses the RC2)

I cannot say if the RC4 can be adapted in a similar (#2) as the RC2, but if anyone can, Robert can.

You can also easily adapt the Newton CRs to use the RC2...or most any QR. Here is a shot of my CR with the CR2....

The un-anodized (silver) bracket was made, for me, by Robert so the camera would sit a little lower than it would with the standard piece...I have, actually, since gone back to the standard piece.

The large, knurld, silver knod (his part # 5-105) replaced the bolt which the bracket came with and allows me to break it down for easier storage in my bag...
