Pick up the National Geographic Traveler (external link) Guide to Ireland for starters. Then look for photo books on Ireland.

Lucky you...I was in Dublin about a year ago...I want to go back. Around Dublin, check out the Wickalow Mountains, Howth, and Malahide Castle, that'll cover your landscape/castle needs.

From Dublin you can take a bus tour into the Wickalow Mountains, definitely take one of the smaller buses (more like a van) over a coach bus, and do a full day tour. I did one of the big bus tours, and I feel like we missed a lot of the more interesting scenes because the bus was too big to get there .

For Howth you can just take one of the Dublin city buses (the yellow double decker buses), there are some beautiful trails along the cliffs there. When I was there we also befriended an energetic puppy who was out by himself and looking for playmates :D.

Malahide was...ok...I was kind of bored, but if you're into castles, you'll like it.

I unfortunately did not get a chance to leave the Dublin area, but I'd love to go back. Ireland is an amazing place, and everyone was incredibly friendly.

Oh, and check out the Guinness Storehouse, it'd be quite sad if you went all the way to Ireland and didn't visit there. Definitely worthwhile for the pint of Guinness in the skybar (one of the highest public locations in Dublin, good pictures!).

I have all of my photos somewhere, let me know if you'd like me to find them and put them up somewhere. They're unfortunately from before I actually understood how to use my camera so they're not as good as they could've been...

Thanks for book tips Jon. (can't get the Guide where I live)
Gee woloi... I really appreciate the reply. will make note of your suggestions in me plan.
If you have a link somewhere to your images, I would love to take a look. The only thing we are not into (forgot to mention in my orig. post) is loads of tourists.

The most spectacular landscapes in Ireland are in the West, around Galway and Clare in particular. The Burren, the Cliffs of Moher and the whole Connemara area are worth checking out.

When were you planning to come over?

I was in Ireland just under a year ago, I think the first week of February 2007, and while it was a bit chilly, there wasn't much in the way of tourists.

I found that I put all of my pictures on Picasaweb, so you can find them all there. I never sorted through them, so there's kinda a lot...

Again, I apologize for any horribly exposed photos, I didn't really know how to use my camera yet.

Redser - when will I go??
Apparently not in February :)

I have no idea yet but end of May/June perhaps...just before all the tourists come in. I assume things are green by then? I will do Google on those place names - just the names sound so great.

We might do this:

Glad you found your link woloi - appreciate it and looking forward to the show...will overlook the exposures.

i lived in dublin for ~15 months in '03-'04, and i wish i'd had an SLR at the time. that said, i still got some good shots w/ my G2, and if landscapes are yr thing, you will be in heaven. just beware of the changing weather, and don't expect too many bright cloudless days. :D

i know a lot of people tend to hit the west and southwest, but if you are looking to get away from the crowds, perhaps set yr sights to Mayo/Sligo, Donegal, and Antrim. we rented a farmhouse in Antrim for a long weekend and it was spectacular...the drive along the Glens is fabulous, and be sure to check out both Giants Causeway and Bushmills.

here are a couple of shots (the urge to do panoramas is immense):

i'd love to get back soon.
