Any suggestions for a Macro lens for a Canon EOS 30D Macro lens to take close up (at least 10x) photos of gemstones? It needs to be able to show very detailed images to show flaws in the gemstones that are viewable under a 10x loop but not necessarily seen by naked eye. I have been looking at the Canon 100m 2.8 but not sure if that would be the right one and would like some suggestions before I spend this much money. Also would I need one of the round flashes that goes around the end of the lens or is that necessary? I have also looked at the screw on macro "extension tubes" that supposedly are a cheap way for close ups and do not affect image quality, do they work? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Here is an example of what I want to accomplish (look at bottom) I would also love to know how to do the flash player video!

You don't need 10x to achieve a basic shot as shown in your link.
Canon make the MP-E65 which can be cranked up to 5x (without a microcope you will not do any better than that) and that is way beyond what your link shows. I would buy the Canon 100mm Macro and buy a set of tubes to increase the magnification.Oh.... and yes, the ring flash is nice and easy for shots like that. If however you already have a normal flash unit, then buying a macro flash bracket and an off-camera connection would be cheaper.

As a working jeweler I am somewhat familiar with what you are trying to do, I would suggest a good trinocular stereo microscope with your camera mounted on the third (camera) ocular port. Something like; http://www.gia.edu …me=Microscopes&filterFor= (external link)
I would also suggest using fiber optic illumination, as this will allow you to 'highlight' inclusions be changing the direction the light comes from.

And Yes it is both expensive and challenging.
