I just upgraded from a 300D to a 40D. What a great camera!

With the 300D, I had an RC-1 wireless remote control that cost maybe $25 new.

The only thing for the 40D that is comparable seems to be the LC-5, but that is $300!!!???

Are there any reasonably priced wireless alternatives? This is just for occasional use.

Is the only reasonably priced alternative the Opteka remote release cord for $15?

There's the POTN Extendable (external link) wired one for $32. The Digital Rebel family are the only ones that support IR, so wireless remotes for anything else need to include both a transmitter and a receiver.

The phottix is said to have a 100m (320 ft.) range ... Is it true?

Mine looks about as cheap as the one you linked. I didn't get a pouch or velcro strap with mine. Mine isn't the same as the one I linked to, now that I looked closely. Mine was from Link Delight. I doubt I will use it enough to wear it out, more concerned about losing it without the velcro strap attached. I was walking in Sequoia with it over my shoulder, wished I had a way to safety strap it to my camera. I always lost cable releases that way with my FD stuff. Rubber band worked wonders, it would be unhooked, just swinging by the band.

phottix is a no-brainer. i use mine all the time when i use the tripod. when we were opening gifts at xmas i set up the tripod with camera and WA and took random pictures.

next month when i photograph the tour of california at the top of the sierra road climb i'm going to set one camera up on the bank on a tripod and fire it with the remote while i shoot from the side of the road with a longer zoom.
