New A570 IS - Problem?

Model: Powershot A570 IS

Well, this is my first new digital camera. I got a good deal on it ($130 shipped) or atleast I think I did - so i bought it brand new

Heres the problem. When i got the camera It came with batteries. Using the camera for the first time to put items on ebay, the battery warning started flashing after about 5 pictures. I thought to myself "hmm, maybe these batteries are just duds" so i went out to the store and got some energizer rechargeables that said they were for "digital cameras and lasted 4x longer"

Anyway, I replaced the batteries with the energizer ones, and the same thing happened! .... SO I put in yet another pair of the energizers (now this will be the 3rd pair) and the SAME thing happened again.

Seems like the camera has a problem and that the low battery signal just keeps blinking. The camera DOES NOT shut off, and takes great pics (from what I can tell - ALTHOUGH Ive never used it for a long period of time, I've only snapped 5-10 pics and put it away. So i dont know if infact the camera will shut off after using it for a short period of time

Any help? I bought the camera brand new.

Also, can someone please direct me to the right section to learn how to take better pictures? (macro specifically, night time pics, etc?) and what is a good size SD card for my purpose (7.1 mega pixels)

Did you fully charge the Energizer rechargeables before you put them in the camera? They're commonly nowhere near fully charged right off the shelf.

Unless you want to use the camera to soot a lot of video as well as still pictures, a 2 GB card's plenty big enough for normal use. I've got room for around 500 shots on my 2 GB cards on the 7 MP A620. If you're doing video, at best quality it goes through about one GB every 9 min.

There's a lot of helpful information on using the PowerShot line of cameras right in this (Small Compact Canons) forum; also some in the Talk About Photography area. If you go to the CANON USA PowerShot web site, there's a link on the right to "Resources and Learning" which will give you a lot more information.

MANY... A570 people are reporting battery problems.

Considering it is consistently one of the best selling cameras on amazon, there is probably 1000x as many with no issues.

Did you charge the energizers? If you didn't, then they probably won't have any charge in them. If you did, then check the contacts (reading the thread linked it seems that the contacts are the main issue) and if you still have no luck, then you may have to return it.

I've had absolutely no problems with my A570 - I've had it since late november, I've taken hundreds of photos and I haven't had to change the batteries one (except for, obviously, the crappy alkalines that ran out after 20 shots when I got it).

I'm having the same problem with my A720. I've taken maybe 150 shots and gone through the disposable AA's that came with the camera and changed out three sets of rechargeables (Energizer and Rayovac Hybrids).

Thats great to know, NO I did not charge theb batteries before I used them... Then I realized you probably need to just like a cell phone. I am glad that the orginal batteries ran out after 20 shots. I am hoping I wont have this problem after the energizers charge.

I may have done the same thing. I was taken in by the advertising on the RayoVac packaging that claims the Hybrid batteries were fully charged and would maintain the charge until they were used (unlike NiMH).

I'm also going to pay close attention to the cover on the 720's battery well. I've had some trouble with getting it closed right.

The energizer batteries that i had for my S2 were horrible...I ended up getting some duracell rechargables that worked out better...but it seems like now most people are saying that the enelopes are the way to go

i have one and no problem here.. i used reg battery then i just got me powerEX2700 mh and using it so far its good.

My A570is constantly flashes the low battery sign, and has done since I bought it .... it'll start maybe a few dozen shots into a new set of batteries. But it'll keep going and take a hundred shots easily after the light comes on...

I think one major reason for early battaries crash is using continuously optical zoom for many times.

I purchased a 570 recently, and also noticed the blinker of death. The stock batteries from best buy, went dead pronto....put in my old optex rechargeable and they lasted longer. I had the batteries go dead in an in oppurtune moment, so I purchased a pack of 4 energizer rechargeables 2500mah for about$18 they have served verry well. I would suggest buying a pack of 4 rechargeables, they should do you fine, and save yourself a bunch of hassle in the mean time.

I had the same problem with both my A570IS and A720IS. After extensively searching the net, I found that this is a common problem and using Sanyo Eneloop low discharge batteries solved it. I switched to Eneloops and have not had the problem ever since. From what I understand, it is not the capacity of the battery that matters, but how soon, in use, it reaches the cutoff voltage of the camera.
