I wouldn't ignore the advice not to use a tripod. But I also don't think a tripod is absolutely necessary. I've taken many hand held shots of the moon. It's as bright as a sunny day. Even at ISO 200 you can get pretty fast shutter speeds when it's near full as long as your aperture isn't too small. The image below was taken handheld.

I would never suggest handheld moon shots.

My advice is to ignore everybody who suggests using a tripod.
No tripod for this shot:

I used a beanbag as I believe that is the best solution.

One man's beanbag is another man's tripod. They're both means of supporting the camera. Why dismiss the tripod?

do not forget about mirror lockup (MLU). Solid tripod is a must. Manual mode also.

Cheers,

Interesting calculator but it only goes to f/8

Yeah, that can be a problem especially if you're using some teleconverters and want to stop down just a bit. Fortunately, the math isn't hard. Stop down 2 stops, and make up 2 stops with either shutter speed, ISO, or a little of each.

Well, it has been done, leaning heavily on IS and some luck. But I don't recommend it either.

I tried to explain that in my original post.
A beanbag is far superior to a tripod I believe, therefore my reason for dismissing tripods.
Why use an inferior option?

I used a tripod, 20D, 70-200 f4 with 1.4 extender with the shutter release cord or self-timer. That's the set-up. Try to find a really dark place to work. I tried handheld, but it was blurry. A beanbag may help if you don't have a tripod. But definitely, even just pressing the shutter button will give you blur.

Can I do anything to eliminate this, I.E. fiddling with white balance or something?

Try using a lens hood if you're not already. Or get anything you can between the lens and the light to keep stray light from reflecting off the glass, a tree, you, cardboard to shade the lens, etc.

For using only 200mm, that's a right nice lookin' moon. Good Shot.

Being a newbie to photography and learning all the time i am really pleased with this one that i took this evening especially as it is one of my first attempts at shooting in RAW

Thanks FlyingPhotog! That's a 100% crop which has been sharpened quite a bit (maybe too much) in PS ...

Dicky - that is one sharp Moon!! That 70-300 is working well for you!

Chris - Great photos! I like the break from tradition in the 4th one by taking it in the day :)

Jay - Oh to have those extra 200mm of zoom! :( :) Lovely shot!
