Well I will have about $2700 after tax goodness, so I think I want either a 5d/24-105 kit or go ahead and get a markIIn. I know some will say that its old tech but for my budget they represent the best I can get. I thought about going d300 but came to my senses after researching the lenses and pricing them comparatively. So I will mainly be shooting portraits and artsy stuff so the 5d is very appealing, but I really love the body and performance of the MarkIIn. So does anyone who has owned both have some advice?

If I'm not mistaken your longest lens is the 50 f/1.8?

I think if you want to shoot portraits even on the 1D you will find this a little short. I suggest the 5D and another, longer lens if you are serious about getting a bigger format body.

I'd only go for the 1D if you can also afford at least one longer lens...Maybe an 85/1.8 or something.

c'mon guys I really need some direction here. I have never shot with a 1d body so I need some input on how it stacks up to the 5d. I like the 12mp and ff but the af im assuming will be far better on the 1d. I really like the speed and body of the 1d too. But I will get a great lens if I get the kit.

Any first hand experience would be greatly appreciated.

Due to the "mainly portraits" part I would go 5D. I'd also swap the 24-105 choice for a 24-70 2.8.
I changed from 5D to 1DMk2n. I do lots of action stuff. Also a lot of outdoors so it was both the AF system and the build that appealed to me.

I used the 24-105 on the 5D a lot. It's a fantastic lens. The 24-70 is a little sharper though but more importantly for portraits the out of focus blur is more pleasing.

The 5D would suit your shooting style more. The 1D is more geared toward sports and anything moving fairly fast.

The only thing that'll do portraits better than a 5D is a 1Ds Mk II (or equiv)

I went from the 5D to the 1D Mk IIn and I don't regret it. I also went from the 24-70L to the 24-105L IS and I don't regret that either.

But, as Pete said, 5D would suit your shooting style more. And that's exactly the answer. ;)

I was having the same problem a little while ago as to which one I was aiming for... ended up deciding on the FF as landscapes and portraiture are important to me.. more important than the better AF and build quality/weather sealing.
