So I thought I'd put up an unsolicited post regarding GrandCentral. www.grandcentral.com (external link) (A Google company).

No I have no affiliation with them.

Anyhow, what it does is they give you a virtual phone number in your area code. From the web you can forward that to any phone you want. You can change it whenever you want as well.

Why?

Put it on your business card. The number never changes. You change phones, no problem, no need for new cards, no problems with people calling the old number and not finding you.

And its free.

Anyhow thought I'd share, I have a few more up my sleeve if anyone finds this remotely insightful.

Looks interesting. I looked through their doc & still aren't sure, can you get your current phone #?

It needs to be a brand new number, can't use your existing number.

I've had it for close to a year now. It's very handy, and full of cool features. Here's hoping it'll stay free for a loooong time :)

GC is fantastic! I've been with them nearly a year now and the service is great. You can forward your number to any land or cell based phone, listen to your email via any web browser, etc... You can also call people back from ANY phone and have the caller ID appear as your GC number. Check them out. I believe I still have a few invites left. PM if interested.

GrandCentral Now Google Voice

I could start a new thread, but it made more sense to dredge this one up.

The service is now called Google Voice. You still can't port a number (i.e., move/reuse your existing number), but it should be available soon from the posts I've seen. A few people have done it.

Like others here, I set it up for my business and linked it to my iPhone. I set the option at Google Voice to send my Google Voice number as the caller ID instead of the true caller. That way I can create a unique ring tone for it so that I'll use my professional voice when answering. It'd be nice to see the callers number and still know that it's from Google Voice, but I don't think it's possible. That would be up to the carrier and I don't think AT&T would be too thrilled to provide this option.
